    • A gasket for preventing the separation of a pipe joint formed between plastic pipes such as pipes manufactured from PVC. The invention provides a restrained pipe joint including a first pipe including a bell with a spigot entryway and a substantially V-shaped annular groove. The annular groove includes a front radial wall and a rear radial wall and a gasket seated in the annular groove. The gasket includes an inner radial face, an opening defined by the inner radial face and an outer radial face with a front radial section located adjacent to the front radial wall of the annular groove and a rear radial section located adjacent to the rear radial wall of the annular groove. A plurality of restraining segments is at least partially embedded in the gasket.

    • A directional illumination system for use with an endoscope for creating shadows in an object field for improving depth perception and contrast. The directional illumination system includes an endoscope distal tip including a plurality of light ports and a plurality of illumination fibers extending within the endoscope distal tip and arranged to direct light through the plurality of light ports onto an object field. At least one light source is operatively coupled to the plurality of illumination fibers for supplying light to the illumination fibers. A switching mechanism is operatively coupled to the plurality of illumination fibers and the at least one light source for selectively delivering light to the illumination fibers. The switching mechanism is configured for activating a first set of illumination fibers that are arranged to direct light through one or more light ports of the plurality of light ports while refraining from activating a second set of illumination fibers, the second set of illumination fibers being arranged to direct light though at least one light port of the plurality of light ports. Activating the first set of illumination fibers without activating the second set of illumination fibers creates shadows in the object field which improves a user's depth perception within the object field.

    • Disclosed are stereo endoscopes where the optical train of one optical system is separated in a left and right optical train. The separation in a left and right optical train is achieved by splitting the entrance pupil in a left and right pupil half. To additionally achieve a significant stereoscopic disparity the distance between the left and right pupil half is expanded. The separation of the entrance pupil and the expansion of the left and right pupil half is achieved by a distally located prism block. This prism block consists of a pair of rhomboidal prisms which are located exactly at the entrance pupil inside the endoscope objective. The front lens group is replaced by an identical pair of front lens groups each assembled in front of one of the two rhomboidal prisms. Such stereo endoscopes with expanded pupil halves enable to build stereo endoscopes with very small diameter or stereo endoscopes for special surgical applications. The described stereo endoscopes also include video endoscopes where the aperture functioning as the entrance pupil is separated in two halves and expanded for better stereoscopic effect. The prism block of the disclosed stereo endoscopes can also be used to separate the exit pupil of the disclosed stereo endoscopes and expand the optical axes on the proximal side to adapt to different stereo endoscopic cameras.

    • A system for confirming the detection of a fire using a plurality of radiation or flame sensors each equipped with a radiation detector and an optical filter having a spectral transmission characteristic in which at least one optical filter is redundant to at least one other optical filter. The result is a system having operationally redundant sensors. In use, if a fire is detected by one of the redundant sensors without including the other redundant radiation sensor in the fire detection calculation, then a fire detection algorithm can switch to the other operationally redundant sensor to check for confirmation of a fire. Due to the spatial separation and if the object is small and close, a different result will be obtained with the redundant detector being used in the calculation compared to the primary detector that is associated with the redundant detector.
