    • A road shoulder working, grooming and compacting apparatus is configured to demountably cooperate with self-propelled operator-controlled machines. The apparatus comprises a first component for controllably working an outer portion of a road shoulder region to urge granular aggregate materials therefrom toward and onto a road surface, a second component positioned posterior to the first component and vertically movable between disengaged and engaged positions for controllably transferring granular aggregate material from a road surface to a road shoulder region, and a third component positioned posterior the second component for controllably distributing, grooming and compacting granular aggregate materials contained within the road shoulder region. The first and third components are movable between raised retracted positions and laterally-deployed lowered positions for engaging and working road shoulder regions while the self-propelled operator-controllable machine travels along a road surface. A fourth component is optionally provided interposed the second and third components for brushing road surfaces.

    • A method of compacting a mat of hot mix asphalt comprising advancing an asphalt compactor over laid asphalt substantially at the rate of advancement of an asphalt paver and within about 50 M behind the asphalt paver, or at a rate of advancement of no more than about 0.7 m/s, the asphalt compactor having a compaction surface which engages the mat over a length of at least about 1 m wherein the compaction surface is formed by a lower run of at least one belt, and wherein the compaction surface applies a maximum average load stress to the mat of less than about 50 kPa. Compaction may be achieved using a compactor (60) comprising two longitudinally spaced rotatable support assemblies (62), wherein at least one of the support assemblies (62) is adjustable to permit steering of the compactor, and wherein at least one of the support assemblies (62) comprises a modular compaction unit comprising a compaction belt (74).

    • The invention relates to an impact compactor which includes a first part on which at least one non-round compactor drum is rotatably mounted; and a second part which is connected to, and movable relative to, the first part. The impact compactor also includes a damping arrangement which is connected between the first and second parts and which is configured to provide a damping function for the relative movement between the first and second parts. The damping arrangement includes an outer tubular member which defines a non-circular inner channel/passage; a non-circular inner shaft member which defines a first axis of rotation and which is positioned, at least partially, in the channel/passage defined by the outer tubular member; and at least one wedge formation which is wedged between the shaft member and the tubular member. The wedge formation is at least partially resiliently deformable and is configured to resist/oppose relative rotation between the shaft member and the tubular member about the first axis of rotation. One of the members is connected to the first part, while the other member is connected to the second part.
