    • The present invention relates to a prefabricated orthosis consisting of a frame (1) of fibre-glass reinforced plastic resin and a reinforcement element (2A, 2B) of carbon and fibre-glass reinforced plastic resin. The frame (1) is sufficiently flexible to provide a good fit and the reinforcement element (2A, 2B) is sufficiently rigid to provide the required immobilisation. Due to the relative flexibility of the frame, the orthosis according to the invention has only to be manufactured in a few sizes to fit the majority of a grown-up population. The orthosis may be used e.g. as a wrist, ankle, elbow or knee joint orthosis.

    • The present invention is directed to a patella-femoral brace (10) which includes an elastic sleeve (11) which is sized so as to be securely positionable about a user's leg and which has a bracing plate (16) located therein which becomes positioned adjacent the lateral side of the patella (33) when the elastic sleeve is correctly positioned about the patient's knee. The support brace includes upper and lower cuffs (23, 24), each having a single hinge arm (27, 28) which connect together at a hinge (30). The hinge includes a locking mechanism (31, 32) to prevent hyperextension of the knee. The support brace is fixed in its position on the leg, and the straps are fixed to the cuffs (23, 24) of the support brace (12), such that the brace plate (16) remains in fixed position relative to the knee to cause a medial pressure to be applied to the patella (33) during flexion and extension thereof for preventing mispositioning (subluxation) of the patella.

    • The present invention relates to a knee brace (10) which includes an upper and lower cuff (11, 12) which are attached at the medial and lateral sides of the knee joint by freecentric locking hinges. The freecentric hinge includes a free floating center of rotation which allows simultaneous translation and rotation of the upper hinge arm (13) relative to the lower hinge arm (14). The freecentric hinge may further include a locking mechanism which comprises a pin (23) located on the upper hinge arm (13) and a hook (26) located on the lower hinge arm (14) which may be forced into engagement to prevent further rotation of the hinge when it is desired to prevent hyperextension of the user's knee. A pair of tension straps (18, 19) may be attached across the back of the user's knee from the upper cuff (11) to the lower cuff (12), and adjusted in their length so that extension of the knee tends to generate tension in the straps (18, 19) which aids in pulling the upper and lower cuff members (11, 12) towards each other. The motion of the upper and lower cuffs (11, 12) towards each other causes the hook (26) and pin (23) of the locking mechanism to be correctly positioned for interengagement and locking of the hinge against further extensional rotation. If desired, the upper hinge arm (13) may be attached to the upper cuff (11) in a manner which allows free sliding movement therebetween in order to compensate for forces incident on the brace (10) due to the motion of the hinge as it tracks the rotation of the user's knee.
