    • A multiple application switching platform includes a switch having a distributed open architecture and incorporating redundancy for enhanced fault tolerance. The switch includes at least one shelf having a midplane containing message buses and TDM data buses. Shelves may be interconnected to form a group wherein various circuit cards are connected to each shelf midplane. The circuit cards perform call processing wherein each card within a group accessing a data bus is pre-assigned a unique set of time slots for each data bus within which that card may transmit onto that data bus. Each circuit card further includes an identification number that enables each card an opportunity to transmit onto a message bus. The circuit cards include line or trunk switch cards that function as an independent switch to interface line or trunks to a shelf midplane. Communications between lines or trunks connected to any group shelf is facilitated by switch cards communicating with each other via messages sent over the message buses. The messages coordinate reception of call information, while the switch circuit cards transmit data (e.g., voice data) over the data buses. A shelf may include other circuit cards, such as a data communications card to interface external host computers or common signaling systems, while each group includes at least one database/processor card to maintain billing and other information and download switch configuration information to circuit cards.

    • A decentralized digital data transmission system has a large number of distributed stations which can only engage in direct data communication with neighbouring stations. Stations located between a source station and a target station function as relay stations. Station to station transmission occurs in each case on different channels. In each station signals received by a reception channel are converted onto a different transmission channel. Conversion of a bit flow or symbol flow arriving at said reception channel is carried out on a bit-by-bit or symbol-by-symbol basis so that data is transmitted in a continuous flow without long delays occurring during conversion as is the case for transmission of data packets. A coupling matrix (KM) is used for conversion. Each channel (C1...Cn) is divided into a plurality of sub-channels (CH-1...CH-8). Transmission channels are allocated in such a way that each station uses wherever possible only sub-channels (SC1...SC8) located in the same channel.

    • A device (1) for testing a data carrying service operating over a telecommunications line. The device comprises a plurality of test circuits (220, 230, 240, 250), each test circuit arranged to determine and test one or more characteristics of a data carrying service and providing means (221, 222, 231, 232, 241, 242) to emulate a termination of said telecommunication line, processing means (200) operable to control the operation of each of said plurality of test circuits, and connection means (270, 271) arranged to connect said telecommunication line to one or more of said plurality of test circuits. The said data carrying service remains connected to said connection means during all of the testing operations provided by said one or more of the test circuits. This enables the device to automatically determine the identity of the data carrying service. The test circuits may be arranged to enable each means to emulate a termination to be interconnected so as to enable the device to provide a passive link in said data carrying service and/or provide throughput testing of said telecommunications line.
