    • A method and apparatus for forming iron carbide from a heated product stream of direct reduced iron (DRI). The apparatus includes a rotary cooler positioned immediately downstream from a rotary kiln such that the rotary cooler receives the heated product stream at a first, elevated temperature. The rotary cooler includes an initial cooling portion that reduces the temperature of the DRI product stream from the first, elevated temperature to a second, reaction temperature. The rotary cooler includes an oven portion position immediately downstream from the initial cooling portion. The temperature of the product stream is maintained at the second, reaction temperature as the product stream moves through the oven portion. A plurality of gas distribution pipes extend along the interior of the rotary cooler in the oven portion to distribute a supply of natural gas beneath the product stream within the oven portion. The introduced natural gas causes the heated DRI to transform into iron carbide. A plurality of burners are positioned to indirectly heat the product stream in the oven portion to maintain the product stream at the second, reaction temperature. A second, cooling portion is positioned downstream from the oven portion to cool the iron carbide from the reaction temperature to a discharge temperature.
