    • Apparatus and methods for applying fasteners during endoscopic surgery. The apparatus generally comprises a handle portion, a triggering mechanism and a fastener applicator. One embodiment of the invention forms the fastener around a single focal point on an anvil. Another embodiment vertically stacks the fasteners in a fastener applicator which is readily detachable from the handle portion by virtue of a rotational locking system and which may be replaced with a new fastener applicator having a fresh load of vertically stacked fasteners. A third embodiment of the invention has a fastener applicator having only one actuated part in its application mechanism, and makes use of biased springs controlled by position of the actuated part for the remaining part of the mechanism. A fourth embodiment of the invention deploys a plunger/ratchet assembly and pawl within the handle portion of the apparatus to ensure that the apparatus application mechanism will not reverse in the middle of a triggered application stroke.

    • A delivery device for intraluminally deploying a clip appliance (30) within a body lumen or cavity of a patient, for example a vein. The clip (30) is configured from a wire-like, bendable material, having a 'W'-like sinusoidal shape. The clip is constructed with sharpened slanted edges at the tips (31 and 32) which provide preferential bending and straightening when the clip is deployed into a venous valve. The delivery device comprises a catheter (50) and a structure (95) for bending and releasing the clip. The catheter is configured with an elongate flexible tubular member secured to a slotted housing (55) having a distal tapered tip. A handle (140) is secured to the proximal end of the flexible tubular member. A balloon (130) and actuator arm (100) combination forces a clip (30) against an anvil (95) to bend the clip from an open to a closed condition and for releasing the clip from a slot (58) in a side wall of the housing. The housing may be configured to retain and deploy a plurality of clip appliances. During clip deployment, the catheter housing is positioned within a vessel or viscus of a patient, and the slot in the side wall is precisely aligned and stabilized with a second inflatable member. A force is applied to bend and secure the clip to the desired location, and the clip is released from the delivery device through the slot in the housing.

    • The specification discloses a forming die movable along a track by a pair of toggle joint linkages (22) to move from a column of staples (12) a staple (12) having a downwardly bowed central portion (130) into engagement with an anvil (27), then bend outer portions (116) down over the anvil to drive pointed legs (28) into the flesh and bring the legs into alignment with each other. The column of staples is pressed by a spring arm (86) and a follower (88) toward the track (84) and is laterally supported in a staple magazine (26). Each toggle joint-linkage (22) is a one-piece member with two rigid arms (115) connected by an undulating spring portion (112). The magazine is detachably connected to the track by spring latches. Another stapler has hook-like anvil (227), and the bowed central portion of the staple as it is pressed against the anvil by a forming die or ram (310), is first straightened and then bent legs are bent from the central portion, thus giving a "soft" initial feel to the stapling.
