    • An extendable intubation device is disclosed that includes a tube assembly having a plurality of elongated tubes. Within the assembly, a base tube is coupled with an extension tube to maintain a continuous fluid pathway along the tube assembly during a fore-and-aft movement of the extension tube relative to the base tube. For example, a portion of the extension tube can be co-axially mounted within the lumen of the base tube. Additional extension tubes can be included. The length and curvature of the extendable intubation device can be manually adjusted by a control unit having at least one control wire. The control wire(s) are attached to the distal end of the most distal extension tube and can be employed to reciprocally move one or more of the extension tubes in a fore-and-aft movement relative to the base tube and / or selectively bend the tube assembly.

The device may include a pressurization chamber having a nozzle, an everting tube mounted within the pressurization chamber, and a valve located at or proximate the distal end of the everting tube. The valve can be configured to open when the everting tube is fully deployed. A tether can be attached to the distal end of the everting tube to restrain the everting tube from fully deploying until a release mechanism is engaged. The valve can be formed from two sheets that are adjacent to each other and/or can include a viscous gel.

    • An endoscope is disclosed, in particular an insertion aid for an endoscope (3) which can be arranged at the distal end of the endoscope tube (3a) and works as a tubular structure which is turned inside out (23). The insertion aid has an element (22) for receiving the tubular structure (23) in an initial, folded state, the front end of the tubular structure being joined to the receiving element. The controlable flexible distal end of the endoscope, can be bent even when the endoscope tube (3a) is sharply bent owing to the fact that the traction cables (40, 41) are arranged each in a small, longitudinally extensible tube (36, 37) and when one traction cable (40, 41) of a pair of traction cables is extended, a vacuum is pneumatically or hydraulically applied to the associated small tube and overpressure is applied to the small tube of the other traction cable (40, 41) of the pair of traction cables.

    • An endoscope (E, E', E'') has a sterilizable, reusable, elongated, optical capsule section (C, C') and a separable, disposable, sterile channel section (S). The capsule (C, C') has a window at a distal end in front of an image sensor (14). Image transmitting electronic cables (16), connected to the image sensor (14), extend proximally from the capsule (C, C'). Light transmitting fibers (20) extend from the window proximally for transmitting light to a site under investigation from a remote light source. The channel section (S) is removably attached in a fixed position to the capsule (C) and has plurality of longitudinal channels (24, 26) for transmitting fluids or for receiving an operative instrument. A flexible tube is connected to the proximal end of each channel for supplying fluid or for manipulating the operative instrument from a remote location. The separable section (S) is disposable after use. An umbilicated balloon catheter (130) or a telescopic catheter (160) can be used to position the tethered endoscope (E) in a passageway. Circumferentially spaced fluid vents (176) can supply jets of gas or liquid selectively to position the endoscope (E). Alternatively, a magnet (184) can be used for manipulating a cpasule (C) with a ferrous housing along a passageway by use of a strong magnet (184) located exteriorally thereof.
