A difference vector is added to the first motion vector predictor candidate to obtain a modified first motion vector predictor candidate and subtracted from the second motion vector predictor candidate to obtain a modified second motion vector predictor candidate. A cost estimate is determined for bi-directional motion prediction on the basis of the modified first motion vector predictor candidate and the modified second motion vector predictor candidate. The addition, subtraction and cost estimate determination may be repeated to obtain a set of modified first motion vector predictor candidates, a set of modified second motion vector predictor candidates and a set of cost estimates. A first motion vector predictor is selected from the set of modified first motion vector predictor candidates and a second motion vector predictor is selected from the set of modified second motion vector predictor candidates on the basis of the set of cost estimates.

    • For decoding a video stream, an encoded video stream is received with an indication of a prediction mode and an indication of one or more prediction helper values. While decoding this encoded video stream, a predicted value is calculated for each of at least one sample based on the indicated prediction mode and on the prediction helper value(s). The decoded video stream, incorporating each of the at least one samples as decoded using the respective calculated predicted value,is then output to at least one of a computer readable memory and a graphical display. An optional step function can be utilized to aid the helper values and enable non-linear prediction values in a given row or column of a prediction unit. At the encoder side the encoder decides the prediction helper values that it uses to encode the video stream that is stored or transmitted to the decoder.

In some embodiments the method comprises signalling a long-term palette information, where the long-term palette information comprises at least information on the color values for each entry in the long-term palette; generating a palette that is used for coding a coding unit by either selecting at least one color value from a long-term palette or by separately signaling at least one color value, or performing both. Alternatively the method comprises constructing a long-term palette during an encoding process or a decoding process; and updating the long-term palette dynamically after coding a coding unit, and constructing a palette used for encoding or decoding a coding unit using information from the long-term palette.
