The staple cartridge includes an array of staples in which at least one staple is angularly-oriented relative to the longitudinal axis of the staple cartridge. The angled staple(s) provide longitudinal flexibility to the stapled tissue. Additionally, the staple cartridge and/or the end effector are configured to provide variable degrees of compression to tissue. For example, the compression of tissue before, during and/or after stapling can be optimized.

摘要： A staple cartridge that includes a multi-staple driver is disclosed. The multi-staple driver is configured to drive multiple staples from the staple cartridge. The staples are arranged in a staple array in which at least one staple is angularly-oriented relative to the longitudinal axis of the staple cartridge. The multi-staple driver can drive staples at various angular orientations and/or from multiple rows of staple cavities. A driverless staple cartridge is also disclosed. A sled in the driverless cartridge is configured to directly engage and drive staples. The staples are arranged in a staple array in which at least one staple is angularly-oriented relative to the longitudinal axis of the driverless staple cartridge.

摘要： Adjunct material and methods of using adjunct material to reinforce tissue in proximity to a staple line are provided herein. In general, the adjunct material can be used to maintain a seal in tissue, such as lung tissue, and prevent stapled tissue from tearing. This adjunct material can be coupled to a jaw of a surgical stapler, and can be deployed into tissue along with the staples. In some embodiments, the adjunct material can comprise an outer material encompassing an inner, hydrophilic swellable material. The outer material can be selectively dissolvable and/or absorbable. When the outer material is punctured by staples or otherwise penetrated, moisture is passed to the inner material which then swells and expands to transition to a predetermined shape to seal the tissue and prevent leaks from forming in the tissue. Portions of the inner material around the staple line can transition to a large radius.

摘要： An apparatus comprises a sleeve, a seal, and an anchor assembly. The sleeve is flexible and non-permeable and is configured to fit in a duodenum. The seal is positioned at the proximal end of the sleeve and is configured to seal the proximal end of the sleeve against the stomach mucosa, the pylorus, or the duodenum mucosa. The anchor assembly comprises a pair of a traumatic anchor ends and a resilient member positioned between the anchor ends. At least a portion of the resilient member extends along at least a portion of the length of the sleeve. The resilient member is configured to bias the anchor ends generally toward each other, to thereby substantially anchor the sleeve in the duodenum. The sleeve is configured to prevent chyme from contacting the mucosa of the duodenum; and to prevent enzymes excreted in the duodenum from mixing with chyme in the duodenum.

摘要： A surgical stapler (10) has a body (20), a shaft assembly (30) extending distally from the body, and an end effector (100) coupled with a distal end of the shaft assembly. The end effector has a stapling head assembly (110), an anvil (150), and a vacuum port (130). The vacuum port is operable to draw tissue (2) between the stapling head assembly and the anvil. The anvil is operable to move toward and away from the stapling head assembly to thereby capture the tissue drawn between the stapling head assembly and the anvil. The stapling head assembly comprises a plurality of wheel assemblies (180, 210) and staple cartridges (230). At least one wheel assembly is operable to rotate to thereby move the anvil toward and away from the body. The remaining wheel assemblies are operable to rotate to thereby drive staples through the captured tissue. The body includes user input features (24, 25) operable to drive the wheel assemblies.

The applicator can be configured to interface with at least one of a first and second jaw of a surgical stapler such that the sealant delivered from the applicator can be deposited into a plurality of openings formed in the surgical stapler.
