摘要： Cylindrical food cans are thermally processed in a retort whilst being reciprocated along their axes with a horizontal and generally sinusoidal (position versus time) motion. The acceleration involved is sufficient to cause the process to operate in a stable regime in which the heating and cooling times are reduced by more than 90 % of their value without agitation, and are subject to at most 1 min/g change in the acceleration. The invention enables the overcooking of conduction food products (in particular) to be avoided.

摘要： Resistance welds on overlapped sheets of metal, such as the welded side seam of 3 piece cans, are monitored by measuring the width of the extrusion (5, 6) formed by material flowing out from the edge of the overlapped sheets (1, 2) caused by the welding process. The width of the extrusion (5, 6) is interpreted in terms of the temperature of the weld, and the welding process can be adjusted accordingly. The measurement of the extrusion width can be done optically.

摘要： A method of reshaping containers, in particular drawn and wall ironed metal cans, in which at least the neck region of the can is reshaped. This enables many novel shapes to be formed from a cylindrical can, for example that of a barrel, or flutes of different orientations around both the neck and the upper side wall. These may be desirable for product differentiation or to project a brand image. The method also enables the flange to be reshaped by applying an axial load through the flange.

The mould is of the longitudinally split type and typically comprises three mould parts (5, 6, 7) separated by transverse gaps. 摘要： A packaging container (10, 50) contains a liquid product formed of two or more parts at least one of which is a liquid. The parts are held in the container in separate chambers one of which contains a gas under pressure, e.g. carbon dioxide. The chambers are separated by a wall which is permeable to the gas so that after the container has been closed permeation of the gas through the wall will establish an equilibrium raised pressure throughout the container. When the container is subsequently opened for dispensing the release of pressure from the container causes the wall to be grossly ruptured and allows the parts of the product to be mixed intimately together for dispensing. In the described embodiments an insert (18, 26) in the container holds a gas-free product such as whisky and the container outside the insert holds carbonated water at an elevated pressure of carbon dioxide gas; at least a part of the insert is moulded from a thermoplastic material which is highly permeable to carbon dioxide.

When the closure has been applied projections (60) formed on the container are received in recesses (63) in the closure threads. 摘要： A method and apparatus of shaping a can (100) by rotating the can on a chuck (65) whilst applying rolls (90) to the outside of the side wall so as to push the side wall inwardly into one or more waists. Typically, the can is held against a lifter pad (50) by air pressure between the chuck and the base of the can. A push ring may be used to load the can side wall axially, whilst still allowing the side wall to flex freely during forming. To this end, the chuck is carried by a spindle which has a smaller radius than that of the chuck.
