    • There is disclosed an antirotation apparatus for use with linear motion bearing assemblies and shafts. The antirotation device includes a housing having a cam clutch insert assembly positioned within the housing. The cam clutch insert assembly includes a retainer ring and at least two locking elements movably mounted within the retainer ring. Each of the locking elements is movable between a position which allows a shaft to rotate in a first direction relative to the housing and an alternate position camming the locking element against the shaft and thereby preventing rotation of the shaft relative to the housing in a second direction. Preferably, a plurality of locking elements are mounted within the retainer ring such that each adjacent locking element has an alternate orientation. By alternating the orientation of the locking elements within the retainer ring, rotation in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions can be prevented. In an alternate embodiment, a pair of retainer rings each having a plurality of locking elements are disposed within a housing. Each retainer ring of locking elements may prevent rotation of a shaft relative thereto in a single direction or, alternatively, both retainer rings of locking elements may prevent rotation of a shaft relative thereto in either direction.

    • A linear motion bearing assembly is provided (98) and includes rolling element retainer structure (100), outer housing sleeves (106, 108), a plurality of load bearing plates (102) and plate retainer structure (110). The rolling element retainer structure of the bearing assembly can be either monolithically formed or, alternatively, assembled from multiple elements. At least a portion of axial tracks (118) are formed in the outer radial faces of the rolling element retainer structure with each track having a load bearing portion (120) providing access to a support shaft (112), rail or spline. An outer housing including a pair of sleeves are provided to encompass and protect the rolling element retainer structure and the rolling elements (114) contained therein. One or more of these components is preferably formed of an engineering plastic or ceramic. A plurality of non-metallic load bearing plates, preferably of the self-aligning type, are positioned within the outer housing and serve to receive and transmit loads from the rolling elements in the load bearing portion of the tracks. Non-metallic plate retainer structure is configured and positioned to directly receive and transmit loads from the load bearing plates to a carriage (not shown) into which the bearing assembly (98) is mounted. Alternatively, the load bearing plates and the plate retainer structure may be monolithically formed. The plate retainer structure may also be extended longitudinally to substantially enclose the exterior surface of the rolling element retainer structure. In this configuration, no separate outer housing structure is needed.

    • A linear motion bearing assembly as provided for movement along a shaft. The ball retainer of the bearing assembly is assembled from a plurality of arcuate interengageable self-contained ball retainer segments (22). Preferably, the plurality of segments are all identical and can be assembled to a variety of configurations for either open-type bearing assemblies or closed-type bearing assemblies. Each of the ball retainer segments (22) includes at least one ball track (30) having a load bearing portion (32) and a return portion (34). These segments are preferably formed of an engineering polymer and are substantially self-contained to protect the bearing balls (52) contained therein from ambient contamination. At least one load bearing plate (44) is axially positioned in each segment (22) and serves to receive and transmit loads from the bearing balls (52) in the load bearing portion (32) of the ball tracks (30). The load bearing plates (44) are preferably retained in the segments (22) to facilitate ease of assembly and to eliminate the need for an outer housing. The segments (22) are joined together to form the overall bearing assembly either through interlocking structure formed on each segment or by retainer clips or bands (24). Optionally, end seals may be positioned on the longitudinal ends to protect the bearing assembly from ambient contamination. A novel and efficient assembly process is also provided for linear motion bearing assemblies. This process includes the steps of providing a plurality of arcuate self-containing ball retainer segments (22), each of said segments including at least one ball track (30) having a load bearing portion (32) and a return portion (34), loading a plurality of bearing balls (52) into the ball track (30), positioning a load bearing plate (44) in the segment (22) adjacent the load bearing portion of the ball track (30), and assembling the arcuate self-containing ball retainer segments (22) to form a linear motion bearing assembly.
