    • There is provided apparatus for exposing the nose of at least one animal to flow of gaseous material. The apparatus comprises an inner manifold and an outer manifold. The inner manifold has an inlet for gaseous material. The outer manifold surrounds the inner manifold and has an outlet for gaseous material. The apparatus also comprises at least one exposure site comprising an opening in the inner manifold and an opening in the outer manifold and an exposure tube suitable for housing an animal, located at one or more of the exposure sites. The exposure tube passes through the opening in the outer manifold and the opening in the inner manifold, extends at least partially into the inner manifold and is supported by the outer manifold and the inner manifold. The exposure tube comprises an exposure inlet in a portion of the exposure tube in the inner manifold and an exposure outlet in a portion of the exposure tube in the outer manifold. Gaseous material flows into the inner manifold via the inlet, flows into each exposure tube via the exposure inlet, flows out of each exposure tube via the exposure outlet and flows out of the outer manifold via the outlet. The flow between the exposure inlet and the exposure outlet has a component in the opposite direction to the flow in the inner manifold.

    • A smoking article (20) has a pattern (34a, 34b, 34c, 34d, 36d' ) of permeability reducing film forming compound applied to the wrapping paper (24). The pattern is configured so that when a smoking article is placed on a substrate, at least two longitudinal locations along the length of the tobacco rod have film forming compound located only on sides of the smoking article not in contact with the substrate. At these longitudinal locations, the restricted airflow to the tobacco due to the presence of the substrate, in combination with the film-forming compound located at the sides is sufficient to cause the smoking article to self -extinguish. However, when the smoking article is held by a smoker, the presence of the film-forming compound does not necessarily by itself cause the smoking article to extinguish. A desirable self burn capability is therefore maintained.

    • There is provided a breath condenser and a collection receptacle for receiving exhaled breath and collecting exhaled breath condensate. The collection receptacle comprises an outer cylinder having a sealed end and an inner cylinder having an inlet at a first end for receiving exhaled breath and an outlet at a second end. The inner cylinder is housed at least partially within the outer cylinder, the outlet of the inner cylinder being located toward the sealed end of the outer cylinder. In use, exhaled breath passes through the inlet, along the inner cylinder, through the outlet and along the outer cylinder, and condensate forms at least on the inside of the outer cylinder. The inner and outer cylinders are adapted to be used concomitantly in a centrifuge to accumulate the condensate in the bottom of the outer cylinder. The inner cylinder may be removable from the outer cylinder. The breath condenser comprises a cooling block for at least partially receiving the collection receptacle. When the collection receptacle is at least partially received within the cooling block, an outer surface of an outer wall of the receptacle is in contact with the cooling block and an inner surface of the outer wall is in contact with the exhaled breath.
