    • A separator assembly (2) for removing material that is entrained in a gas stream. The separator assembly (2) comprises a housing having (4) inlet (20) and outlet (22) ports for the gas from which material is to be removed. The inlet (20) and outlet (22) ports are located toward the upper end of the housing. A flow director (24) is positioned so that gas flowing into the housing (4) flows over the flow director (24) so that the incoming gas is made to follow a generally helical path within the housing. The separator assembly (2) also comprises a shield (28) which extends across the housing towards the lower end thereof so as to leave a collection space (8) between it and the lower end in which material that is separated from the gas stream can collect. There is at least one opening (52) in or around the shield through which the material can flow past the shield into the collection space (8). The face of the shield (28) which is directed towards the upper end of the housing is bowl-shaped .

    • A filter element for removing material that is entrained in a gas stream comprises a wall of a filtration medium which defines a hollow space, for a gas stream to flow from the space through the wall. The filter element includes an end cap having an inlet tube extending into the hollow space for a gas stream to be supplied to the space, the inlet tube having a side wall extending between an upstream open end and a downstream open end. There is at least one opening in its side wall. The inlet tube has an upstream band, a middlestream band and a downstream band, the said bands being axially adjacent to one another and non-overlapping. The bands have equal axial lengths of at least 5% of the length of the inlet tube, and are arranged such their planes are perpendicular to the axis of the inlet tube. The proportion of the area of the side wall that is open in the upstream band is smaller than that in the middlestream band, and the proportion of the area of the side wall that is open in the middlestream band is smaller than that in the downstream band.

    • A filter assembly for removing material that is entrained in a gas stream. The filter assembly comprises a filter element comprising a wall of a filtration medium which defines a hollow space, for a gas stream to flow from the space through the wall to be filtered. The wall includes a filtration layer, and a drainage layer located outside the filtration layer in which liquid separated from the gas stream can collect. The filter element comprises first and second end caps at opposite ends of the wall, the first end cap including an inlet for a gas stream to be supplied to the space within the wall. The filter assembly further comprises a housing in which the filter element can be received when in use. The housing has an inlet port for a gas stream to flow into the housing which communicates with the inlet in the first end cap, and an outlet port through which gas which has passed through the filtration medium can leave the housing. The drainage layer extends over at least a part of the external surface of the second end cap between the second end cap and the housing and the part of the drainage layer between the second end cap and the housing is locally compressed by at least one longitudinally extending fin.

    • An air conditioning system comprises first (8) and second (13) heat exchangers having first and second counterflow passages, a twin bed gas purification unit comprising (i) first (22) and second (23) parallel filter beds, (ii) valve means for directing air from an inlet to flow through the first filter bed and for directing purified air from the first bed so that a greater proportion flows to an outlet while a smaller proportion flows in counter direction as purge gas through the second bed and then to a purge outlet, (iii) a plurality of heater units (30) at spaced apart locations along each of the filter beds for heating a gas as it flows through the heater bed, and (iv) means for controlling the heater. Connecting means can direct air to flow from the air intake through the first passage of the first heat exchanger (8), through the first passage of the second heat exchanger (13) and through the air/water separator (17) to the inlet (25) of the purification unit, then from the outlet (26) of the purification unit through the second passage of the first heat exchanger (8) and through the heater (47) for delivery into the vehicle or other space in which the system is fitted.     • Apparatus for generating gas by electrolysis of a liquid comprises an electrolysis cell, and first, second and third chambers. Liquid for supply to the electrolysis cell is stored in the first chamber. The second chamber contains liquid which is a product of the electrolysis reaction and is enriched with a first gaseous product of the electrolysis reaction, and has an outlet for controlled release of the first gaseous product. The third chamber contains liquid which is a product of the electrolysis reaction and is enriched with a second gaseous product of the electrolysis reaction, and has an outlet for controlled release of the third gaseous product. A first channel which connects the first and second chambers, and a second channel which connects the second and third chambers. Each of the first and second channels provides a trap for liquid which can provide a barrier to passage of gas between the chambers which are connected by it, irrespective of the level to which liquid in the first chamber falls during operation.
