    • There is described a system for transmitting data from a transmitter to a receiver. In the receiver, a waveform synchronization error is estimated, and an error signal is sent to the transmitter. In the transmitter, the transmitted signal is corrected, based on the error signal. The transmitted signal may contain a carrier phase probe, allowing the receiver to estimate carrier phase errors, and may contain symbol phase probes, allowing the receiver to estimate symbol phase errors. This allows the receiver to make the required error estimates in a simple manner, and thus is particularly applicable in situations where the receiver is a battery powered portable device, because the error estimates can be formed without large increases in the size or power consumption of the receiver.

    • A system is described that can aid the querying of structured data stored in a computer system, with particular emphasis on a class of complex queries representing cross tabulations and queries requiring the building of models for their resolution. In the first step the system reads the description of query languages supported by one or more information storage systems; it goes on to read the data dictionaries or other metadata that define the data stored within such systems and finally it optionally reads translation lists concerning the data. The user is then requested to enter a set of keywords describing the search that is needed. The information gathered in the first step is searched and the system returns the most relevant queries as a set of links sorted by relevance. The responses include readable definitions of the queries and more formal query specifications. The system can also display a more accurate representation of the query using associated keywords, thus providing relevance feedback. When a link is selected the underlying query may be run and the results from the data returned. The mechanism is also applicable to formulating complex queries against data models.

    • A system for improving uplink performance in a CDMA environment via the implementation of a regularisation method in a multi-user detector. A suboptimal linear multiuser detector having a minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection technique is utilised. In order to obtain an improved estimate of the user's signals, a semi-hard decision rule is used in the regularisation method on an iterative basis. Specifically, a first iteration uses an estimated initial solution (to the regularisation method) and knowledge of a finite data set to obtain a first proposal solution. A second iteration uses a semi-hard proposal solution (to the regularisation method) and the first proposal solution feedback to obtain a second more accurate solution. This process is repeated iteratively.

    • A method is disclosed for achieving synchronization in an array of semi-synchronous devices. A processor array has an array of processor elements, wherein each of said processor elements comprises a cycle counter, and a master processor element is able to transmit control command signals to each of the other processor elements. Each processor element is such that, on receipt of a control command signal, it acts on that signal only when its cycle counter reaches a predetermined value, and the master processor element is such that it transmits control command signals only when its cycle counter takes a value which is within a predetermined range, or "safe window". By appropriate setting of the "safe window", it can be guaranteed that, when the master processor element transmits a control command signal to each of the other processor elements, those command control signals are acted upon at corresponding times within the other processor elements.
