One of at least two flow range scales may be selected using a flow range selector to adjust the sensitivity of the peak flow meter. A flow range selection indicator provides visual reference as to which flow range scale has been selected. A peak flow calculator used in cooperation with zone indicators on the peak flow meter permits a user to customize the peak flow meter for that user's predicted personal best exhalation range.

    • A ventilator circuit (2) for use in administering medication to a patient includes a chamber housing (4) defining an interior space (6) and having an input end (8) and an output end (10) and a one-way inhalation valve (56) positioned upstream of the interior space (6). The one-way inhalation valve (56) is operative to permit a flow of medication into the interior space (6) of the chamber housing (4). An inhalation conduit (88) communicates with the output end (10) of the chamber (4) and is adapted to transmit the medication to the patient. An exhaust conduit (18) is connected to the inhalation conduit (68) and a one-way exhaust valve (78) is located in the exhaust conduit (18). The one­ way exhaust valve (78) is adapted to prevent a backflow of gas from the exhaust conduit (18) into the inhalation conduit (58). A method of administering a medication to a patient includes transmitting oxygen from a gas source through a holding chamber (4) and an inhalation conduit (88) to the patient during an inhalation sequence and introducing the medication into the holding chamber (4). The method further includes preventing a substantial transmission of an exhaust gas into the holding chamber (4) during an exhalation sequence and transmitting a substantial portion of the exhaust gas into the exhaust conduit (18) during exhalation. The method also includes preventing a substantial transmission of the exhaust gas from the exhaust conduit (18) into the inhalation conduit during subsequent inhalation sequences.
