    • A television tuner for tuning analog and digital television signals that requires only one off-chip filter. An integrated first frequency stage up-converts the received signal to a higher frequency. An off-chip filter provides coarse tuning of the up-converted signal. An integrated second frequency stage separates and down-converts the signal into I and Q components having a low IF in a range of 10-15 MHz. An integrated on-chip filter finely tunes the I and Q components. Where tuning of both analog and digital signals is contemplated, the on-chip filter is an image rejection filter. Where tuning of only digital signals is contemplated, the on-chip filter may be a DC notch filter.

    • A wideband fast-hopping receiver front-end uses direct digital synthesis (DDS) to provide quadrature LO signals (108, 110) to the front-end's mixers (100, 102). A DDS circuit (132) stores multiple digital word sequences which represent desired waveforms, and outputs desired sequence pairs to a pair of DACs (134, 136) in response to a closk signal and a command signal. The DACs convert the sequences to analog signals, which are filtered and squared as necessary to provide quadrature LO signals to the mixers. Frequency hopping is accomplished by changing the command signal, which causes a different pair of sequences to be output and the frequency of the LO signals provided to the mixers to be changed. Active image rejection is combined with DDS LO generation to provide faster frequency hopping. The front-end is combined with an ADC (180) and a communications signal processor (184) to provide a complete system, all of which can be integrated together on a common substrate.

    • A modulator includes two modulation units and a summer (412c). Each of the first and second modulation units receives and modulates a set of carrier signals (ILO, QLO) with a set of information signals (IIN, QIN) in accordance with a particular modulation scheme to generate a respective modulated component, with the second modulated component (b) including a signal inversion relative to the first modulation component (a). The summer combines the first (a) and second (b) modulated components to generate a modulated signal. Each modulation unit can include a pair of mixers (410a, 410b; 410c, 410d) and a summer (412a; 412b). The first mixer (410a) receives and modulates an inphase carrier signal (ILO) with a first information signal (IIN). The second mixer (410b) receives and modulates a quadrature carrier signal with a second information signal (QIN). The summer (412a) receives and combines the outputs from the first and second mixers to provide the modulated component. The information signals provided to the first and second modulation units are swapped and may be inverted.

    • A polyphase receiver comprises an RF front end (10 to 28) for receiving a wanted data signal modulated on a carrier signal and for producing quadrature related low IF signals, an image rejection filter formed by a polyphase filter (30) for filtering the quadrature related low IF signals, soft limiting means (36,38) for compressing the dynamic range of the filtered quadrature related IF signals and a signal demodulator (41) for recovering the data signal. The soft limiting means (36,38) has a characteristic which is substantially linear at signal levels 10dB below a predetermined minimum wanted signal level, moves into compression for higher signal levels and hard limits at substantially 10 dB above the desired receiver sensitivity which avoids degrading the sensitivity of the receiver.
