    • A manganese dry battery which is stable and has an excellent gas tightness with any type of heat-shrinkable tube. The manganese dry battery comprises an anode zinc can (1), a cathode mixture (2) contained in the can, a separator (14) interposed between the can and the mixture, a carbon rod (3) inserted in the center of the mixture, a gasket (5) sealing the opening of the can and having a hole in the center thereof through which the carbon rod is inserted and a heat-shrinkable tube (6) covering the circumference of the can with the outer periphery of the gasket. The heat-shrinkable tube comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene and a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, and a sealant (9) is applied at least between the opening end of the can and the gasket.

    • A rechargeable battery, such as, a lithium ion battery, which includes a first laminate layer having a perimeter region and a central region, and a second laminate layer having a perimeter region and a central region. The first and second laminate layers each has a metal foil, an outer polymer layer bonded to one side of the metal foil, and a hot melt polymer coating on the other side of the metal foil in at least perimeter region of the metal aluminium foil. The metal foil is preferably aluminum foil. The hot melt polymer coatings in the perimeter regions of the first and second laminate are sealed together. A central chamber is formed by the central regions of the first and second laminate layers. There is an anode, a cathode and electrolyte arranged in an electrical current producing and conducting manner in the central chamber. Two electrically conductive strips positioned between the two perimeter regions. One end of the connectors is connected to the anode, and one end of the other connector is connected to the cathode. Each other end of the two connectors extend beyond the perimeter regions of the laminates.

    • An electrochemical cell, preferably a cylindrical cell, is provided comprising: a can (312) for containing electrochemically active materials including positive and negative electrodes and an electrolyte, the can (312) having an open end, a closed end with an end wall (314) extending across the closed end, and side walls extending between the open and closed ends; a first cover (345) positioned across the open end; and a pressure relief mechanism (370) formed in a surface of the can (312), preferably an arc-shaped groove (372) formed in the end wall (314) of the can (312). A second cover (311) is preferably positioned on the end wall of the can (312) to be in electrical contact therewith and to extend over the pressure relief mechanism (370). Also provided is a method of preparing an electrochemical cell comprising the steps of: forming a can (312) having an open end and a closed end; forming a pressure relief mechanism (370) in a surface of the can (312); dispensing electrochemically active materials in the can (312); and sealing a first cover (345) across the open end of the can (312). The cell construction allows a large internal volume to be available for containing electrochemically active materials.
