    • An anti-theft RFID system for monitoring the presence of a plurality of tagged items is provided. Each of the tagged items is attached to an RFID tag. The anti-theft RFID system includes an RFID reader, the RFID reader including an antenna and being configured to transmit an interrogating signal to the RFID tags and retrieve data from the RFID tags through the antenna; a processor connected to the RFID reader and configured to process the data that the RFID reader retrieves from the RFID tags; and a display connected to the processor and configured to display a result processed by the processor. The processor is configured to update a first counter value indicating the number of tagged items located within a predefined area and to update a second counter value indicating the number of tagged items being taken away from the predefined area. The display is configured to display the values of the first and the second counters and thereby to assist an operator to determine the occurrence of a security event by analyzing the values of the first and the second counters. A method implemented by the system is also provided.

    • A transmission sequence is broadcast from a locator to a group of transponder devices. Each transponder identified with the group is arranged to receive and capture at least a portion of the transmission, correlate the captured information with an internally stored reference sequence for the identified group, and identify a correlation when the captured information correlates with the internally stored reference sequence. Each transponder that finds a correlation is arranged to broadcast a transmission reply sequence at a precisely determined time interval so that the transponders in a group transmit at different times. A series of locators receive the transmission reply sequence(s), each at a precisely logged time of arrival, and the locators forward the received results to a central processing unit for time synchronization, location tracking, and inventory logging.

    • A system and method for notifying a vehicle user that a particular item that is part of a predetermined group of items is missing when the user enters the vehicle. Items that a vehicle user may bring into the vehicle that may be part of the group may be in wireless communications with the vehicle by any suitable communications protocol, such as Bluetooth protocol or an RFID tag. The vehicle will identify whether there is a known group of items entering the vehicle, and if so, determine whether an item from that group of items is missing. If a missing item is detected, the vehicle can then notify the user about the missing item. Additionally, the vehicle can also tell the vehicle user where the missing item is located if the missing item is part of an ad-hoc internet group.

    • The wireless radio-frequency identification (RFID) picocellular system includes a central control station optically coupled to one or more electrical-optical (E-O) access point devices that generate individual picocells. Central control station includes service units that provide conventional wireless cellular services, and further includes one or more RFID reader units. The E-O access point devices are adapted to receive electromagnetic RFID tag signals from RFID tags within associated picocell and transmit optical RFID tag signals to central control station, which converts optical RFID tag signals to electrical RFID tag signals, which are then received by one or more RFID reader units. The system allows large numbers of RFID tags in picocellular coverage area to be quickly read and the information stored. The relatively small size of picocells allows for high-precision locating and position tracking of items without need for manually scanning RFID tags with an RFID reader.

    • A locating system for locating a specific subject among a number of possible subjects having an RFID tag attached to subjects which, when interrogated by an RFID reader, provides a unique identification code. A database containing information about subscribers including a list of RFID tag codes associated with the subjects of interest is included in the system. Transceivers having an RFID reader and a processor responsive to the transceiver and the RFID reader are also included in the locating system for locating a subject of interest. When the transceivers receive RFID code transmitted via the communications network, the transceiver is activated to transmit data to any nearby RFID tags. Upon receipt of a response from the RFID tag, the transceivers transmit the tag data to the communications network so that the subject of interest can be located.
