    • The invention relates to a low ignition propensity cigarette having a self-extinguishing cigarette wrapper which is capable of self-extinguishing the cigarette. The cigarette wrapper comprises an oxygen storage and donor metal oxide to support and maintain free-burn of the self-extinguishing cigarette while retaining the low ignition propensity property of the self-extinguishing cigarette wrapper. The invention further relates to a low sidestream smoke cigarette having low ignition propensity properties. The wrapper has a composition which reduces sidestream smoke from a burning cigarette and comprises in combination, an oxygen storage and donor metal oxide catalyst and an essentially non-combustible finely divided porous particulate adjunct for the catalyst. The sidestream smoke reducing composition reduces porosity of the wrapper to render the cigarette as self-extinguishable. The oxygen storage and donor metal oxide catalyst is in an amount which supports free burn of the cigarette while retaining the self-extinguishing property of the cigarette wrapper.

    • Smoking articles having a significantly reduced ignition proclivity, including cigarettes, cigars and little cigars are provided. The present invention relates to a paper wraper suitable for use in a smking article wherein the paper wrapper is coated over at least part of its surface area with a substance. The substance is comprised of two or more of the following: alumino silicates including sodium alumino silicate and/or magnesium alumino silicate, anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium carbonate decahydrate, silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate, di-sodium phosphate, mono-ammonium phosphate. Also provided are improved wrapper papers for smoking articles wherein the smoking articles self-extinguish. Methods of making the smoking articles and the paper wrapper composition are also described.

The discretely treated area (22) interacts with a coal of a burning tobacco firecone as it advances to self-extinguish the smoking article (10). The composition of the treated area includes a permeability reducing substance.

    • An optical inspection system mounts on a cigarette making machine (200) or like system, and detects the presence of bands (5) having irregular widths or spacings. In response to the detection of irregular bands (5) the optical inspection system instructs the cigarette making machine (200) to reject cigarettes which will be subsequently made from portions of the cigarette paper containing the irregular bands. The optical inspection system includes a sensor (210) which can accommodate different types of cigarette paper, and band material having varying reflectance properties. In operation, sensor circuitry detects the range of voltages produced by a sensor detector (210), and formulates a peak value (or average peak value) for the range of voltages. The circuitry then takes a percentage of this peak value to form a threshold value. This threshold value is compared with the AC signal from the sensor detector (210). If the AC signal exceeds the threshold, then the circuitry asserts a signal to indicate that a band is present. The output of the sensor is fed to a computer (212). The computer detects whether the bands detected by the sensor (210) have regular band spacing and width.
