    • A dimensional measurement device is configured to send a first beam of light to a remote target which returns a reflected portion of the first beam as a second beam. The device includes a first light source; a fiber coupler assembly; a fiber-optic switch configured to receive a first electrical signal in a first or second state, and to send the second portion out of the switch measure port if the first electrical signal is in the first state or to send the second portion out of the switch reference port if the first electrical signal is in the second state. The device also includes an optical system; a reference retroreflector; a first electrical circuit configured to provide the first electrical signal in a first or second state, to convert the third portion into a first reference value, to convert the fifth portion into a first measure value if the first electrical signal is in the first state, and to convert the seventh portion into a second reference value if the first electrical signal is in the second state; and a processor configured to determine a first distance from the dimensional measurement device to the target, the first distance based at least in part on the first measure value, the first reference value, and the second reference value.

    • A coordinate measurement device sends a first beam of light to a retroreflector target which returns a portion of the first beam as a second beam. The device includes first and second motors that direct the first beam of light to a first direction determined by first and second angles of rotation about first and second axes, first and second angle measuring devices that measure the first and second angles of rotation, respectively. A distance meter measures a first distance from the device to the target. The device also includes a position detector and a diffuser, a second portion of the second beam passing through the diffuser and onto the position detector, the position detector configured to produce a first signal in response to a position of the second portion on the position detector. A control system sends a second signal to the first motor and a third signal to the second motor, the second and third signals based at least in part on the first signal, the control system configured to adjust the first direction of the first beam to the position of the target. A processor provides a 3D coordinate of the target.

    • A laser scanner includes a light source that emits a light beam within an environment, and a data capture component that captures the light beam reflected back to the laser scanner from the environment. The laser scanner also includes a projector integrated within a body of the laser scanner or mounted to the body of the laser scanner at a predetermined location, the projector being operable to project visible information onto an object located within the environment, the projected visible information being indicative of images, data or information, the projected visible information being at least one of design intent information, information acquired by the laser scanner, or guidance to an operator. Alternatively, a laser tracker includes a light source that emits a light beam towards a target located within an environment, and a data capture component that captures the light beam reflected back to the laser scanner from the target located within the environment.
