    • In an apparatus for measuring a distance by triangulation, according to the light-reception signal outputted from a position sensing device (PSD) (5), a computing circuit (11) generates a light quantity signal (A) representing an incident light quantity and a signal (B) representing the distance to an objective body. According to the light quantity signal (A), a circuit (13) for determining the light quantity generates signals (A1, A2) representing that the light quantity is an appropriate light quantity, an insufficient light quantity or an excessive light quantity. According to the distance signal (B), a circuit (14) for determining the distance generates signals (B1, B2, B3, B4) representing that the distance is in a measurement central region, a short-distance measurable region, a long-distance measurable region, a short-distance unmeasurable region, or a long-distance unmeasurable region. These signals (A1, A2, B1-B4) are given to a decoder and driver (15), and LEDs (7, 17, 8, 18) are driven. Thereby, displayed are the respective operational states of an appropriate light quantity in the central measuring region, an appropriate light quantity in the short distance or long-distance measurable region, an appropriate light quantity in the short-distance or long-distance unmeasurable region, and an abnormal light quantity.
