    • A multi-positional mercury switch (1, 2, 3) for use with miniature relays (4). The mercury switch apparatus has mercury wettable magnetic contact structures (11, 12, 211, 212, 221, 222, 311, 312) supported in a sealed envelope member (10, 20, 30) supporting the magnetic contact structures with ends thereof extending from the envelope member for interconnection with terminals of the relay. A mercury holding assembly (13, 14, 23, 24, 33, 34) is slidably located within the sealed envelope member adjacent the magnetic contact structures and is responsive to an external magnetic field generated by electrical signals in a coil (410) surrounding the sealed envelope member for engaging the magnetic contact structures and establishing an electrical conducting path between the magnetic contact structures.

    • An overflow control system for use with home appliances such as washing machines, incorporating conventional stand pipe which receives the outlet conduit from the appliance, the stand pipe being provided with an attachment having a displacement, conductivity or a pressure sensor installed for sensing the height of liquids in the stand pipe. This stand pipe may be vertically connected to the sewage line outlet found in a home and the signals from the sensors may be used to shut off the power to the appliance and to excite an alarm. Connected in parallel with the sensors may be a moisture sensor deployed under the appliance which again shuts the power off whenever the machine is inadvertently filled beyond its limits or when leakage occurs.

    • A liquid-state switching device utilizes movement of a column of liquid, resulting from a change in surface tension of the liquid caused by electrocapillary action, to operate various switch means. The electrocapillary effect is induced across a single interface sets of single of mercury and an electrolyte or electrolytes. Filter partitions are installed to maintain the liquids in a proper relationship throughout variations in position of the switching device. Means are provided to assist the return of the column of liquids to their normal positions including a bias voltage, a permanently installed resistance, and/or pressurized gas pockets.

    • A liquid micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) component includes a board, a channel, multiple liquid droplets, and one or more conductive elements. The channel is within the board and contains the multiple liquid droplets. A first liquid droplet has first properties and a second liquid droplet has second properties. When a force is applied upon the first and second liquid droplets, the first liquid droplet changes in accordance with the first properties with respect to the one or more conductive elements and the second liquid droplet changes in accordance with the second properties with respect to the one or more conductive elements thereby changing one or more characteristics of the liquid MEMS component.
