    • A cathode ray tube display system is provided for displaying alphanumeric characters which are cyclically refreshed in the sequence of selected positions. The system has conventional means for moving the CRT beam through an arbitrary sequence of selected positions with reference to first and second coordinate axes, in response to position signals, and character defining means for deflecting the beam at each selected position within which a selected character may be defined and in response to signal representations of said selected character for modulating the beam intensity along said pattern to define the character.The system further includes storage means for sequentially storing a coded representation of the character selected to be displayed as well as tab codes and carriage return codes for said displayed characters.In addition, the means for generating said position signals include: (1) means responsive to an access tab code for calculating the tab position for the next character to be displayed with respect to the first coordinate axes only in the initial cycle during which each of the selected characters is formed, (2) means for storing each of these calculated tab positions, and (3) means operable only during refresh cycle responsive to a tab code for accessing the stored previously calculated tab position corresponding to said code.

    • A system for uniformally expanding a proportionally spaced character display in order to properly align the smallest characters of the character set without affecting the proportional relationship of the characters in the character set. An extra vertical scan line is added to the displayed characters at an escapement increment determined by the character of the character set requiring the greatest proportion of scan line expansion per character width in order to achieve proper character definition. Those characters requiring an additional unit of escapement to be properly defined utilize the added vertical scan lines and excess added vertical scan lines are distributed in the ''''white space'''' between characters. The added display columns have the same affect as increasing the number of scans per unit of character escapement.

    • A photochromic cathode ray storage tube and means for optically projecting onto the photochromic screen of said tube any one of a number of different fonts. Any character in the font subsequently may be read out and displayed by scanning the electron beam of the storage tube over the portion of the screen storing the character, sensing the light produced during the scanning, and intensity modulating the screen of a display means, such as a concurrently scanned display kinescope, in response to the light which is sensed. The location and size of the area of the display means at which the character is to be displayed may readily be controlled. The font may easily be changed by erasing the one stored and then optically projecting a new font onto the same photochromic screen.

    • The contents of a matrix-type shift register used in an optical character reader is displayed on command on a cathode ray tube. Display is accomplished by generating a raster pattern scan for each storage position of the shift register, said raster pattern scans being at the same relative positions to one another as the storage positions in the shift register. Each raster pattern scan, referred to as a cell raster, is intensified if the corresponding shift register storage cell contains a video or ''''black bit.'''' If the storage cell does not contain a black bit, the corresponding cell raster is not intensified. A partial outline of all cell rasters may be intensified to provide a visual indication of all cell positions. The resulting pattern displayed by the cathode ray tube is a configuration which corresponds to the configuration of black bits held in the shift register.

    • A system for receiving queries from data entry means at a plurality of remote stations and for sending replies from a central station having data storage and data processing means to the appropriate remote station to be displayed on a data presentation means such as a cathode ray tube. The queries at the remote stations are interrogated by circuitry at an intermediate station. A recirculating memory means is provided at the intermediate station for assembling the query messages. A complete query is transmitted from the intermediate station to the central station where a reply message corresponding to the query is developed. The reply is transmitted back to the intermediate station and stored in a recirculating memory. The reply message is periodically sent as a succession of signals to the appropriate remote station to control the display on the data presentation means. Periodically, the central station interrogates all queries stored at the intermediate station, including those for which replies have previously been generated, and generates new replies in response to these queries. The information display at the remote station is in this manner maintained current.
