    • Total internal light spatial light modulation apparatus includes a light source for projecting infrared light; a prism for reflecting the projected light from an internal surface therein; and an array of pixel posts made of electrostrictive material and positioned proximate a back face of the internal surface for selectively eliminating pixel areas of reflection of the projected light to form an image thereby. A multiplexer is provided to select a set of pixel posts to be electrically charged which corresponds with the image, and electrical contacts are formed on each pixel post no permit electrical charging of each selected pixel post. Method of fabricating the pixel post array, wherein each row of the pixel post array is formed as a monolithic structure, includes the steps of providing a slab of alternate layers of ferroelectric and electrically-conductive material; vapor-depositing electrical contacts on the slabs in electrical communication with the layers of electrically-conductive material at locations corresponding to the pixel posts to be fabricated; securing the slabs together in a front-to-back relationship with divider plates positioned therebetween; and cross-cutting a number of grooves through the slabs to define the pixel posts of each row.

    • A laser image recorder constructed while utilizing integrated optics techniques. In the preferred embodiment, a grating coupler on top of a glass waveguide diffracts a laser beam into the waveguide. An aspheric diverging lens in the waveguide diverges the laser beam across the full width of the waveguide. An aspheric collimating lens positioned across the full width of the waveguide collimates the beam and directs equal intensity radiation into a large number of equally spaced, parallel, electro-optical modulators. Voltages are selectively applied to each of the electro-optical modulators to produce at the output of the modulators an intensity modulated line of light. A film is positioned adjacent to the output of the modulators and records the line. The film is transported in a direction perpendicular to the line and a second line is recorded, etc. In a second embodiment light is coupled into the waveguide by means of a prism-film coupler. In a third embodiment the laser beam is focused onto the end of the waveguide. A fourth embodiment utilizes a cylindrical lens system to focus a line image of the laser beam directly onto the electro-optical modulators. Another embodiment illustrates a color recorder wherein three separate line recorders, as described above, are placed adjacent to each other, with a first recorder utilizing a red laser beam, a second recorder utilizing a yellow laser beam, and a third recorder utilizing a blue laser beam.

    • Electro-optical device particularly useful in the modulation of reflected light typically comprising an electrochromic device containing a reflecting layer electrode in sandwiched arrangement, said electrochromic device being a sandwich arrangement of a transparent electrode, a reflecting layer electrode, a film of a transition metal compound and a solid insulating film disposed between the electrodes. The electrochromic device exhibits coloration and bleaching thereof at ambient temperature by control of the polarity of an applied electric field, whereby light reaching the reflecting solid layer electrode is modulated in intensity, thus modulating, in turn, the reflected light.

    • The shade is a combined heat reflecting, light transmitting, absorbing, and thermal insulating shade which is contoured in a regular repetitive geometric pattern such that one face of the shade can be exposed to the sun, in a manner to position certain areas so that they become show areas which receive direct solar radiations, and to position contiguous areas relative to the show areas so that they become underlay areas which are shaded by the adjacent show areas and receive only indirect solar radiations. The shade is normally transparent photo-chromic material which, when subjected to direct solar radiation, changes color and loses its transparency to a degree depending upon the intensity of the direct radiation, and which, under high intensity direct sunlight, becomes substantially opaque.
