    • A bellows, spool, and collar system for dispensing projectiles and submunitions with a predictable and uniform pattern is disclosed. The system utilizes projectiles densely packed in a spool. A plurality of spools is packaged in a missile, bomb, or similar tubular device with an energetic bellows actuator between each spool. The energetic bellows actuator expands rapidly to push a spool of projectiles out of the tubular housing. Timing means is provided for each bellows to provide proper axial spacing between spools prior to subsequently timed release of the projectiles.

    • A projectile carrying sub-munitions which may exhibit orientational sensitivity utilizes a resilient member to prevent individual grenades from rotating out of the desired orientation. As a skilled artisan would readily understand, the sub-munitions is one type of rotationally sensitive device. Other types of rotationally sensitive devices include but are not limited to grenades, grenade fuses and sub-munition fuses. In the described embodiments, artillery shells carrying grenades packed in circular arrays around a central longitudinal axis may exhibit orientational sensitivity with some types of slide fuses, such that an optimal orientation is that the slide fuse faces outwardly along a radial line from the longitudinal axis. A resilient member, such as a resilient sleeve around one or more sub-munitions, is provided to with adequate elasticity, surface area, and coefficient of friction in contact with the sub-munitions to prevent the sub-munitions from rotating about their individual axes during shipment, storage, firing, and flight of the artillery shell.

    • A penetrator having a plurality of stacked penetrator segments is disclosed. Each penetrator segment has a nose portion and a rear portion. The rear portion of each penetrator segment has a rearwardly opening cavity therein and a plurality of fins pivotally mounted thereon. The penetrator segments are stacked such that the cavity of the forwardmost penetrator segment secureably contains the nose portion of the following penetrator segment such that there is a press-fit between the cavity and the nose portion. The following penetrator segments are similarly positioned such that the nose portion of each following penetrator segment is secureably positioned in the cavity of the immediately preceding penetrator segment. The fins of each penetrator segment are restrained in a stowed position when the cavity of the respective penetrator segment contains the nose portion of a following penetrator segment. An explosive element is located between each of the penetrator segments. Upon initiation of deployment of the penetrator, the segments remain in axial alignment until the explosive elements explode, thereby causing the penetrator segments to separate from each other. When a penetrator segment separates from a preceding segment, the fins of the preceding segment are allowed to pivot to their deployed positions. Once the fins of each penetrator segment have pivoted to their deployed positions, the penetrator is then in a fully deployed configuration such that each penetrator segment can separately impact a target.

    • An ammunition cartridge comprises a full bullet 1 held in a primer socket D containing a propellant charge P. The bullet 1 includes an flechette 2 and a launcher 10 concentrically received on the flechette to allow relative translation. The flechette 1 comprises an flechette body 3 of hard material having a conical head 4, and a stabilizer 6 fixed to a rear of the body 3. The stabilizer 6 has an integral lip 8 which seals the bullet 1 in the barrel to optimize pressure build-up during firing. The launcher translates forward relative to the flechette when released from the primer socket D. The full bullet remains intact in flight. The launcher strikes the target first and transmits high energy to the target. Immediately thereafter, the flechette translates forward to penetrate the target.
