    • A boiler wherein the hot combustion gases flow upwardly through ducts to transfer their heat to a fluid such as a liquid which engages the duct walls at the sides of the latter opposition from the duct interiors. The boiler is composed of a number of sections which butt against each other. The face of one section which butts against the face of an adjoining section is formed with a series of vertically extending half channels, and the channels of the butting faces of adjoining sections register to form gas ducts up which the hot combustion gases flow. Each of the butting faces of each section is formed with a series of these half channels located one next to the other so that the butting faces of the pair of adjoining sections form a plurality of upwardly directed ducts for the gases. The ducts taper in an upward direction so as to have at their upper ends outlets which are of smaller cross-sectional area than their bottom inlet ends. Also, inclined fins distributed along the interior of the half channels of one section coact with oppositely inclined fins distributed along the interior of the half channels of the butting section to form helicoidal fins in the interior of the gas ducts, and these fins are located closer to each other in the region of the upper outlet end of the gas ducts than in the region of the lower inlets thereof.

    • A once-through steam generator or boiler of simple modular construction that utilizes vertical heat transfer tubes, intended primarily for heat recovery in combined cycles. It utilizes a novel method of assembly and operation that make it particularly effective for large combined cycles. Circuit assemblies with a once-through flow path are the key building blocks used to assemble boilers to fit any size gas turbine. They are individually bench fabricated in a horizontal plane. The boiler is manufactured by sequentially stacking individual circuit assemblies in parallel thereby building a circuit module. During the stacking process the inlet and outlet of each circuit assembly are connected to headers to allow the modules to be erected into a heat transfer bundle. For large boilers several transportable circuit modules are interconnected in the field to complete a once-through boiler. Through the use of jumper tubes and a novel maintenance space integrated in the boiler, interconnection of modules in the field is simplified at installation and repair made easy. A novel method of dewatering and drying vertical tube boilers is incorporated. The dewatering method uses stored energy to reverse the flow of water and steam in the boiler thus forcing water out of the tubes. This operating method is important in preventing corrosion of carbon steel tubes, thereby permitting the practical application of carbon steel tubes to vertical tube once-through steam generators.

    • This application covers a wet base boiler of the multi-section type, that is, a boiler in which the firebox is ''''surrounded'''' by water, but one of the legs of each section, i.e., the right leg, is made different in cross-sectional area from the left leg. Thus, the right legs may be made much larger in cross-sectional dimensions than the left legs, especially if the nipple port of the boiler is positioned above the right legs. This results in an improved quality of steam for boilers operated to generate steam. A tankless water coil may be added to the boiler, either positioned in the water chamber above the firebox or in the nipple port area. In either case, there will be a clockwise water movement throughout the sections of the boiler due to the difference in the sizes of the right and left legs, causing the water to move downwardly in all of the right legs and to move upwardly in all of the left legs. This circuital travel of the water through the legs of the various sections improves the heat transfer to the water flowing through the tankless coil.

    • A heat exchanger for cooling process gases which are under high pressure and temperature. The withdrawn heat is used for high pressure steam generation in accordance with the natural circulation principle. The heat exchanger comprises U tubes suspendedly inserted in a plate or tube sheet. Two chambers are provided above the plate, are separated from one another, and are intended for the coolant-steam circulation. A housing surrounds the U tube bundle and is connected to and below the chambers. The housing has at least one process gas inlet and at least one process gas outlet. One arm of each U tube is constructed as a double tube. The inner tube has the function of a gravity tube, and the remaining annular conduit, as well as the remainder of each U tube, have the function of risers.
