    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for cooling damping fluid in a vehicle suspension damper unit. A damping unit includes a piston mounted in a fluid cylinder. A bypass fluid circuit having an integrated cooling assembly disposed therein is fluidly coupled to the fluid cylinder at axial locations that, at least at one point in the piston stroke, are located on opposite sides of the piston. The cooling assembly may include a cylinder having cooling fins thermally coupled to an exterior surface of the cylinder and made of a thermally conductive material. The bypass channel may include a check valve that permits fluid flow in only one direction through the bypass channel. The check valve may be remotely operated, either manually or automatically by an electronic controller. A vehicle suspension system may implement one or more damper units throughout the vehicle, controlled separately or collectively, automatically or manually.

    • A shock absorbing system for impact energy dissipation employs compressible members each having an internal void containing a first working fluid. At least one accumulator is connected to the compressible members through a fluid conduit such that the first working fluid is transferred from the compressible member to the accumulator responsive to compression induced by an impact. A pad and a liner intermediately constrain the compressible members. Resilient structural members are placed intermediate the compressible members to deform responsive to compression of the foot bed induced by foot strike provide both energy dissipation and resilient recovery of the compression cylinders to their uncompressed state.

    • A hidden storage system is incorporated in the bed of a vehicle without altering the bed's external appearance and the bed is provided with collapsible support beams. The storage system is located adjacent the wheel well sections of the bed, and uses hinges to open and close the fender/side panel of the bed. The collapsible support beams provide a support/safety mechanism if impacted from the side. Since the storage system does not alter the truck's external appearance, it reduces the attraction for theft. Also, since the storage area does not extend inwardly beyond the conventional wheel wells, the storage system leaves most of the truck bed free for use. The hidden storage system is incorporated into the bed by either an initial fabrication method or a conversion method using an existing bed.

    • A shock absorber includes an integral pressure tube and rod guide. The integration of these two components manufactured from aluminum allows the use of an aluminum pressure tube to eliminate axial differential thermal expansion between the pressure tube and an aluminum reserve tube. The use of aluminum for these two components reduces weight and improves the heat dissipation for the shock absorber. On addition, by producing the rod guide integral with the pressure tube and also of aluminum, additional weight savings are realized. Further advantages for the integration of these components include the elimination of leak paths, the limitation of assembly operations and the opportunity to utilize a "near net-shape" manufacturing process such as impact extrusion or semi-solid forming for the manufacture of the integral pressure tube and rod guide.

    • A direct acting shock absorber for damping the movement of the body of an automobile is disclosed. The shock absorber comprises a pressure cylinder forming a working chamber having first and second portions operable to store damping fluid. A piston is disposed within the pressure cylinder between the first and second portions of the working chamber. The shock absorber further comprises a fluid reservoir operable to store damping fluid. The shock absorber also includes a valve for permitting damping fluid to flow from the first portion of the working chamber to the fluid reservoir during movement of the piston in a first direction. Finally, a second valve is provided for permitting damping fluid to flow from the fluid reservoir to the second portion of the working chamber during movement of the piston in a second direction.
