摘要： An apparatus for manufacturing a three-dimensional netted structure, the apparatus including: drawing-down units, the drawing-down units being submerged or partly-submerged in a liquid, and a die with a mouthpiece having a plurality of holes, the die adapted to extrude the filaments downward at a speed lower than the filament dropping speed whereby the filaments drop in between the drawing-down units. The distance between the drawing-down units is smaller than the width of the assembly of the extruded filaments. The drawing-down units are adapted to contact four surfaces of the assembly of the filaments before or after the drawing-down units are submerged.

摘要： Chemically or biochemically active agents or other species are patterned on a substrate surface by providing a micromold having a contoured surface and forming, on a substrate surface, a chemically or biochemically active agent or fluid precursor of a structure. A chemically or biochemically active agent or fluid precursor also can be transferred from indentations in an applicator to a substrate surface. The substrate surface can be planar or non-planar. Fluid precursors of polymeric structures, inorganic ceramics and salts, and the like can be used to form patterned polymeric articles, inorganic salts and ceramics, reactive ion etch masks, etc. at the surface. The articles can be formed in a pattern including a portion having a lateral dimension of less than about 1 millimeter or smaller. The indentation pattern of the applicator can be used to transfer separate, distinct chemically or biochemically active agents or fluid precursors to separate, isolated regions of a substrate surface. Waveguide arrays, combinatorial chemical or biochemical libraris, etc. can be made. Differences in refractive index of waveguide and cladding can be created by subjecting the waveguide and cladding, made of indentical prepolymeric material, to different polymerization or cross-linking conditions. Interferometers are defined by coupling arrays of waveguides, where coupling can be controlled by altering the difference in refractive index between cladding and waveguide at any desired location of the array. Alteration and refractive index can be created photochemically, chemically, or the like. Sensors also are disclosed, including biochemical sensors.

摘要： A polymer-bonded fiber agglomerate includes short fibers selected from carbon, ceramic materials, glasses, metals and organic polymers, and a polymeric bonding resin selected from synthetic resins and thermoplastics. The fiber agglomerates have an average length, measured in the fiber direction, of from 3 mm to 50 mm and an average thickness, measured perpendicularly to the fiber direction, of from 0.1 mm to 10 mm. At least 75% of all of the contained fibers have a length which is at least 90% and not more than 110% of the fiber agglomerate average length. A fiber-reinforced composite material having the fiber agglomerate and processes for the production thereof are also provided.

摘要： Disclosed are multicomponent fibers derived from a blend of a sulfopolyester with a water non-dispersible polymer wherein the as-spun denier is less than about 6 and wherein the water dispersible sulfopolyester exhibits a melt viscosity of less than 12,000 poise measured at 240° C. at a strain rate of 1 rad/sec, and wherein the sulfopolyester comprising less than about 25 mole % of residues of at least one sulfomonomer, based on the total moles of diacid or diol residues. The multicomponent fiber is capable of being drawn at a relatively high fiber speed, particularly at least about 2000 m/min, and may be used to produce microdenier fibers. Fibrous articles may be produced from the multicomponent fibers and microdenier fibers. Also disclosed is a process for multicomponent fibers, nonwoven fabrics, and microdenier webs.

The soft solid magnet includes at least one magnetic substrate made of magnetic material and a facial layer with figures or characters. The facial layer is combined with the substrate to form an integrated sheet body. The sheet body is mold-pressed by a mold set to form the ornamental soft solid magnet. The mold set includes an upper mold section and a lower mold section made of soft material. The upper mold section is preformed with recessed/embossed figures or characters in accordance with the figures or characters of the facial layer. After pressed, the sheet body is placed on a magnetically attractive surface, whereby after the sheet body is cooled and patterned, the sheet body keeps in a plane state without shrinking, curving or deforming.

摘要： Prosthetic devices, such as orthopedic, dental and maxillofacial prostheses, are provided which are composed of an inner load bearing, functional component and an outer foamed or sintered porous coating of selected bioengineering thermoplastics. The bioengineering thermoplastic coating is provided in regions where long-term bone fixation is desired by tissue ingrowth. The coatings offer substantial biomechanical advantages over any material system previously reported. Also provided, are anatomically shaped devices comprised totally of bioengineering thermoplastics with select porous areas; these devices include bone gap bridges, bone caps, and alveolar ridge augmentation implants.

摘要： Wet-laid sheets of softwood high yield fibers in combination with hardwood high yield fibers. The sheets, which are strong enough to be handled by commercial equipment, are formed on conventional papermaking machines using a furnish comprising a major proportion of softwood high yield fibers in admixture with a minor proportion of hardwood high yield fibers. The hardwood high yield fibers are specially prepared by a procedure comprising treating hardwood with relatively high levels of chemicals under relative stringent conditions and defibrating the treated hardwood with relatively high levels of power input. Airfelts made from these sheets exhibit low wet densities. Processes for making the sheets and the airfelts are also provided.
