    • There is described a sheet numbering process involving feeding of individual sheets (S) in succession, which individual sheets (S) each carry a plurality of imprints (P) that are arranged in a matrix of rows and columns, and providing unique serial numbers to multiple ones of the plurality of imprints (P) carried by the individual sheets (S). The sheet numbering process comprises numbering of at least some of the individual sheets (S), wherein numbering of the individual sheets (S) is selectively commutable between a first numbering scheme (N1) and at least a second numbering scheme (N2; N2′; N*), different from the first numbering scheme (N1), without interruption of the numbering process. The first numbering scheme (N1) involves providing all imprints (P) of a first subset (S0) of individual sheets (S) with a unique serial number (SN1) of the first numbering scheme (N1). The second numbering scheme (N2; N2′; N*) involves providing all or part of the imprints (P) of a second subset (S′; S*) of individual sheets (S) with a unique serial number (SN2; SN2′; SN*) of the second numbering scheme (N2; N2′; N*). The first subset (S0) of individual sheets (S) and the second subset (S′; S*) of individual sheets are sorted after numbering in dependence of the numbering scheme (N1; N2; N2′; N*). Also described is a sheet-processing machine for carrying out the aforementioned sheet numbering process.

    • There is described a method for processing stacks (1) of sheets of securities, especially banknotes, into bundles (3) and bundle packs (4), said sheets each having an array of security prints printed thereon which array comprises M columns and N rows. According to this method, each stack (1) of sheets is processed into M successive bundle groups (3*) of N individual bundles (3) each and these M successive bundle groups (3*) are stored in M separate storage areas (11), which storage areas (11) are vertically superposed, whereby each one of the M successive bundle groups (3*) is stored in a predetermined one of the M separate storage areas (11). Subsequent stacks (1) of sheets are processed, whereby each one of the M successive bundle groups (3*) processed from said subsequent stacks (1) of sheets is piled in the same predetermined one of said M separate storage areas (11) as the first stack (1) of sheets. When K stacks (1) of sheets have been processed, each storage area (11) contains a complete set (4*) of N bundle packs (4) of K bundles (3) each. There is also described a bundle collating system (10) for collecting the bundles (3) processed according to the above collating method.

    • A sheet is moved into a tray. The height of a bundle is determined as it moves along a conveyor. A belt drive is activated to pinch the delivered sheet and advance it to a swingable applicator whose outfeed end is movable to a position just above the top of the bundle. Information is printed upon the sheet prior to entering the applicator assembly. The sheet is advanced through the applicator assembly at a speed synchronized with bundle speed. The applicator lays the sheet upon the bundle which is then moved to a wrapper. The outlet end of the applicator assembly is moved so that it is positioned just above the bundle receiving the sheet under control of a height sensor. The timing of sheet delivery is a function of bundle speed and bundle height. A microprocessor responsive to a detector sensing the feeding of the sheet to the applicator assembly and responsive to bundle height controls the initiation of advancement of the sheet from the tray. An AC synchronous motor drives the applicator asembly to the desired outfeed height and an encoder detects the height of the applicator outfeed end for feedback control. Preprinting of additional data may be provided off-line and such data may be read prior to insertion of the preprinted sheet into the receiving tray to control the formation of bundles. In order to synchronize the mating of the preprinted sheet with the desired bundle, the sheets containing data relating to such bundles may be temporarily stored through the use of a queuing roller assembly.
