    • An inkjet print device prints by reciprocally moving a carriage (15) in a main scan direction while controlling ink ejection from a print head (17) according to information on the position of the carriage (15) both in a forward movement and in a return movement. An encoder (22), a first U/D counter (29), a second U/D counter (30), a timer (31), and an interval timer (32) senses the position of the carriage (15). The encoder (22), the first U/D counter (29), and the timer (31) senses the speed of the carriage (15). A TBL memory (33) is used in determining a positional correction quantity at a sensed carriage speed from a positional correction quantity at a predetermined carriage speed. A head control section (26) controls ink ejection from the print head (17) based on the carriage position and the positional correction quantity.

    • An optical sensor has a sensor compensation to compensate for sensor degradation due to airborne contaminations in the operating environment. For example, in a thermal ink jet printing environment, the thermal ink jet operation produces misting or splashing of the thermal ink jet droplets, causing a gradual degradation of the sensor sensitivity due to a surface accumulation of the ink jet droplets. The optical sensor device includes an optical emitter emitting an optical signal according to an emitter input, an optical detector disposed to detect the optical signal and output a detector output having an output level according to the detected optical signal, a variable attenuator having an adjustable attenuation setting, and a controller adjusting the attenuation setting of the variable attenuator. During an adjustment operation, the controller determines the attenuation setting at which the output level of the detector output exceeds a predetermined value, and accordingly sets the variable attenuator to operate the detector output at an output level exceeding the predetermined value by a margin. Compensations for the optical emitter and the optical detector are disclosed, including the use of a variable pulse-width modulated signal.

    • When torque of a DC motor is dropped down to zero at a stop position, force is generated by deformation of a member for transmitting the torque of the DC motor. The force moves the driven body which is in the stopped state, which results in a shift of the driven body from the stop position. Therefore, a process for stopping the driven body is performed according to the amount of shift by an encoder which periodically outputs a pulse signal according to movement of the driven body, a unit for acquiring velocity information and position information of the driven body based on the pulse signal, a controlling unit for controlling a moving unit based on the velocity information and the position information, and a unit for calculating the amount of shift, which is caused by the force generated by the deformation of the member for transmitting the torque, at the stop position of the driven body.
