    • Apparatus and method for forming a stackable container from a container blank. The apparatus generally includes a blank feeder configured to place the blank on a conveyor, an index folder configured to pre-fold a plurality of inner fold-down flaps and an index flap over each of two opposing sidewall flaps of the blank, and a pressure former configured to attach a first leading extension to a leading wall of the blank and a first trailing extension to a trailing wall of the blank, wherein the first leading extension and the first trailing extension are foldably attached at an angle of about 90 degrees to one of the inner fold-down flaps or one of the sidewall flaps. Embodiments of the present the present invention can advantageously provide a reliable approach for forming a container from a blank with relatively fewer folding defects.

    • Apparatus for transferring a foil matter from outside to inside of a machine. The apparatus has a longitudinal axis. The machine includes a frame comprising a first wall and a second wall. A window in the second wall. The outside and inside areas are separated by the first wall. The foil matter is held at a level of use outside by a first idling roller arranged in a frame. The device guides the foil matter so that its transfer from outside to inside is effected by at least one progressive turning of this foil matter around a second idling roller during passage of the foil matter through the window. The second roller intersects an edge of the window. The foil matter passes over a third idling roller angled with respect to the second one and to reoriented the foil matter along the longitudinal axis of the machine.

    • A closing method for a multi-sided paperboard carton includes sealing a cover with side edge extensions to corresponding side flanges defined by fold lines on the paperboard carton during continuous feeding of the carton along the feed path. The side flanges of the carton body are bent downward during continuous feed movement with a force sufficient to cause the flanges to fold and remain free and below a plane passing through the fold line when released. The cover is placed on the carton to lie substantially in a plane and with the edge extensions overlying the flanges. A hot air stream is directed into the half-V gap presented between each flange and associated cover side edge extension to activate an adhesive coating and the flanges are pressed against the cover for sealing. The carton is carried through the bending stage in a die having an open bottom cavity and forming blades on its side edges that engage the fold line between the side flanges and the carton side panels from below. Platen members are presented for engagement with the blade edges of the die to bend and squeeze the flanges to create the downwardly bent orientation and facilitate sealing during continuous movement. The side flanges may be pre-broken and preheated to facilitate the bending and sealing operations downstream.

    • Method and apparatus for erecting carbon blanks having preformed fold lines in which flat carton blanks are pressed into a pair of cavities, whose stationery bases are offset in height relative to one another for forming the lid and tray portions, by a descending male die member of complementary configuration, which is urged into the two cavities. After the side panels of the lid and tray portions are erected, two pairs of fingers undergo rotational and reciprocating motion to fold glue bearing edge flaps into their assembled position to maintain associated side panels in their erected position. The carton blank is provided with biasing tabs to urge the triangular folds of the carton blank into the proper position in readiness for folding of both the tray and lid edge flaps.

    • A box forming machine specifically designed to use hot-melt adhesives in the formation of boxes from pre-scored blanks, and to operate at a rate equal to the box-filling demand. Pneumatic means deliver blanks from an overhead stack to a horizontal conveyor. Cam-activated pressure wheels press desired portions only of the blank against continuously revolving adhesiveapplicator wheels as the conveyor moves the blanks thereover. The conveyor delivers blanks to the box-forming station, comprising a ram assembly, a box forming die and cam-activated fingers which bend tab portions against side portions as the ram forces the blank through the die. As each box is formed, it pushes the preceding box out of the bottom of the die and onto a delivery conveyor. The adhesive applicator assembly is simple, can not clog or foul, and requires essentially not maintenance.
