    • A method of seam welding metal tube from a sheet metal blank wherein the sheet metal blank is provided with central key locating slots and pre-curled edges, then centrally located on a collapsible mandrel, having a heat sink liner extending therearound to a longitudinally extending gas gallery slot, by the key locating slots and then skid rolled therearound towards a longitudinally extending gas gallery slot for seam welding the curled edges while they are clamped to the collapsible mandrel over the gas gallery slot. Pre-curling the edges avoids upstanding edges at the seam weld and the method provides consistently reliable welds for tube blanks which may be manufactured in short lengths for, for example, the manufacture of bellows.

    • A fluting machine and method produce fluted poles. The fluting machine has an aperture means, a carriage, and a track configured so that the carriage can travel on the track toward the aperture means. The carriage has a fluted mandrel for holding a pipe to be fluted. The carriage carries the fluted mandrel and pipe parallel to the track to and from the aperture means at a constant speed irrespective of any fluctuations in driving resistance. The aperture means has a stationary inner part, a rotatable outer head, and a set of rotatory dies. The rotatory dies are circumferentially situated about and perpendicularly extendable within an aperture opening defined by the stationary inner part. The aperture opening is for accepting the fluted mandrel and pipe therethrough. The rotatable outer head causes extension of the rotatory dies within the aperture opening and against the pipe when the rotatable outer head is rotated. The rotatory dies roll along the length of the pipe on the fluted mandrel at constant pressure to thereby produce flutes in the pipe.

    • Improved zircaloy tubes for PWR reactors are produced by a method and apparatus by controlling spirality, that is, the spiral formation of the wall-thickness eccentricity. In the past, that spiral formation has caused the tubes to bow during use, and the present invention permits the maintenance of that spiral formation to acceptable limits. The hollow or workpiece is positioned upon a cylindrical mandrel and is advanced step-by-step through a work zone between a pair of rolls having grooves which define the work zone. The workpiece is turned through a predetermined angle on the mandrel prior to each rocking cycle. The present invention involves controlling the angle at which the metal working forces are exerted so as to minimize the turning moment or torque effect which results in producing the spiral formation.

    • A tube rolling mill having two sets of three rolls each which are reciprocatingly driven along a length of a tube supported by a mandrel. Each roll is forced against the tube by individual cams that each have a surface of one or more tapers to provide controlled reduction in wall thickness of the tube. If the mandrel is tapered, a reduction of inside tube diameter is accomplished. Fins are formed on the tube by either providing space between at least two rolls along their tube contacting surfaces or by providing a groove in a tube contacting surface of at least one roll.
