    • A bridged network and a method for performing bridged network topology acquisition. The bridged network includes network segments and smart bridges having one or more ports. The network segments are interconnected by the smart bridges via the ports. Each of the smart bridges being configured to perform steps to accomplish the network topology acquisition. The method also performs steps to accomplish the network topology acquisition. The steps include an inventory construction that compiles a list of the ports that are connected to each of the network segments. Among the ports that are connected to any of the network segments the inventory construction respecting each port operates cooperatively so as to cause the list respecting each of the ports to converge rapidly to the state in which all the lists are similar and yielding a uniform segment inventory. The bridged network topology acquisition in each of the smart bridges operates cooperatively with the bridged network topology acquisition in other smart bridges in order to create a total network report from most recent segment inventories. The bridged network topology acquisition includes propagation, collection, and distribution. The bridges network topology acquisition affords better management of network topology changes.

    • The invention relates to a method of routing a call in a network having a plurality of nodes interconnected by trunks, the method including calculating the costs of different routes for taking the call, and selecting a route as a function of cost. According to the invention, the cost of a route is a function of the bandwidth available on the trunks making up the route, of the resources available on said trunks, and of the bandwidth required for the call. The cost of a trunk can be represented in the form of a vector whose first component is a decreasing function of the available bandwidth, and whose second component is a decreasing function of available resources. The invention makes it possible, when routing a call, to take account of quality of service in terms of bandwidth. If the second component is a function that has a value that is constant above some quantity of available resources, then the invention makes it possible to limit the number of routing calculations performed, and to avoid making new routing calculations so long as the topology of the network remains unchanged.

    • A method of processing frames received at a sending port of a switching device for communication to a destination port includes storing in the switching device an offset value, a comparator value, and an expectant value; comparing information located at a position in a frame determined by the offset value with the comparator value to obtain an outcome; and processing the frame with the outcome. Processing the frame may include communicating the frame to a destination port or setting the priority of the frame. The offset and comparator values may be part of a filter that also includes an anchor value from which the offset value is measured and a mask value that masks the frame information before comparison with the comparator value. Where there are a multiple of filters in the switching device, the method may include combining the filter outcomes to obtain a filter group outcome; and processing the frame with the group outcome. Combining the filter outcomes may include logically combining their outcomes. The method may also include merging the outcome with frame forwarding information from another source; and processing the frame with the merged outcome. Apparatus in accordance with the invention practices these methods.
