    • A test system for a evaluating a digital signal link includes a data signal generator, a data signal receiver, a digital signal link to be tested and a test interference signal injection (TISI) network connected as part of the digital signal link. The TISI network includes a data signal input port for receiving digital data signals generated by the data signal generator, a data signal output port for providing the digital data signals to the data signal receiver, and a controlled impedance data signal path carrying the digital data signals between the data signal input port and the data signal output port. An interference signal input port receives interference signals over a range of frequencies from an interference signal generator. One or more directional couplers directionally couple the interference signals into the data signal path toward either the data signal output port or the data signal input port at an impedance that substantially matches the impedance of the digital signal link. The directional couplers are configured to maintain d.c. isolation from ground to facilitate the transfer of d.c. coupled data signal logic through the TISI network.

    • A computer system (12) comprising a first DSL modem (M12) for communicating data packets (MG1, MG2, MG3) with a second DSL modem (M14) after a connection is established between the first DSL modem and the second DSL modem. The data packets are for communication from the first DSL modem to the second DSL modem at a downstream communications rate and for communication from the second DSL modem to the first DSL modem at an upstream communications rate. The computer system further comprises a memory (MEM12) operable to store a computer program (60), where in one embodiment this computer program is an operating system. The computer program is operable to require a data parameter indicating a number of data packets which may be communicated in an instance from the computer program to the first DSL modem for communication to the second DSL modem. Lastly, the computer system further comprises a field (e.g., SendWindow field) for providing the data parameter to the computer program, wherein the number is responsive to the ratio of the downstream communications rate relative to the upstream communications rate.

    • Apparatus and method for improving the detection of signals obscured by either correlated Gaussian or non-Gaussian noise plus additive white Gaussian noise using Estimates from multi-channel data of model parameters that describe the noise disturbance correlation are obtained from data that contain signal-free data vectors, referred to as “secondary” or “reference” cell data. These parameters form the coefficients of a multi-channel whitening filter. A data vector to be tested for the presence of a signal passes through the multi-channel whitening filter. The filter's output is then processed to form a test statistic. The test statistic is compared to a threshold value to decide whether a signal is “present” or “absent”. Embodiments of the apparatus and method include estimating the signal amplitude both implicitly and explicitly and calculating test statistics for signal detection in both Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise.
