    • A programmable voltage-controlled oscillator includes a ring oscillator having a number of selectable delay stages, and a resistor value detection circuit configurable for coupling to an external resistor. The resistor value detection circuit includes at least one internal resistor and is operative to generate, based at least in part on a value of the external resistor, an output signal indicative of a value of the internal resistor. The output signal is utilizable in controlling an oscillation frequency of the ring oscillator based at least in part on selection of one or more of the selectable delay stages. The voltage-controlled oscillator may be utilized in a phase-locked loop of clock recovery circuit in an integrated circuit, and in numerous other applications.

    • A phase lock for a synthesizer phase reference oscillator that is used in conjunction with a conventional DDS circuit to synthesize an RF output frequency includes a second DDS circuit that is added with a reference increment value as an input to provide a phase offset frequency. A frequency/phase comparator compares a frequency reference oscillator output with the phase offset frequency to generate a control signal for phase locking the phase reference oscillator to the frequency reference oscillator. To determine the correct value for the reference increment value, a switch is provided between the frequency/phase comparator and the phase reference oscillator and the control signal is input to an analog-to-digital converter. During a nullturn onnull procedure the resulting digitized control signal is observed by a control system as the reference increment value is adjusted until a slow ramp, positive or negative, in the control signal is observed. Then the switch is closed to allow the control signal to phase lock the phase reference oscillator coherently to the frequency reference oscillator. In this way coherence is achieved from unit to unit with a more precise frequency output.

The variable tail currents can be used to appropriately weight the present and previous digital input signals. The weighted outputs of the differential transistor pairs can be summed to provide a filtered output signal. The tail currents can be advantageously varied with variable current sources or by adjustment of the relative widths of the differential transistor pairs. In other embodiments, additional differential pairs can be added to adjust for systematic offset voltages caused by process-induced variations in the structure of circuit devices or to induce a desired offset.

    • A differential current driver has a current source that supplies current selectively to two output terminals according to data to be transmitted. A comparison circuit compares the current output by the current source with a reference value and generates a control signal.
