    • Folded dipole antenna elements (2, 4) are disposed generally in parallel, being spaced by a distance smaller than a quarter of the wavelength employed. The antenna elements (2, 4) are connected to a combiner (16) via feeders (12, 14) having different lengths. The difference in length between the feeders (12, 14) is such that received signals resulting from a radio wave coming to the antenna elements (2, 4) from the front and received by the antenna elements (12, 14) are in phase with each other at the inputs (16a, 16b) of the combiner (16), whereas received signals resulting from a radio wave coming to the antenna elements (2, 4) from the back and received by the antenna elements (12, 14) are 180null out of phase with each other at the inputs (16a, 16b) of the combiner (16). A variable phase device (18) is connected between one of the antenna elements (2, 4) and the combiner (16) to selectively couple the in-phase or 180null out of phase version of the received signal from that one antenna element to the combiner (16).

    • The present invention relates to antennas for radio signal frequencies, an electromagnetic shield and a mechanical package for electronic components. The antenna uses a three-dimensional conductive structure to enclose the components that are used for the transmission and reception of wireless devices. This conductive structure preferably encloses electronic components. The structure can be divided into two or more sections such that each section is enclosed providing shielding from external electromagnetic fields. Each conductive section is connected to the antenna port or ports of the device it contains. The conductive mechanical package is preferably sized to resonant at the desired frequency of operation. If the electromagnetic fields to be radiated are within and outside the package, the internal bulkheads can be used to control the desired resonant modes. Photonic band gap structures can be also used to connect the pole elements.

    • A low-profile, tri-filar, helix antenna having either linear polarization or circular polarization (CP) includes a single feed and does not include an internal feed network. The antenna includes three metal, bent, quarter-wave monopoles that are physically positioned at 0, 120, and 240 degrees, respectively, on a top flat surface of the antenna. One of the monopoles is directly fed, and the other two monopoles are parasitically coupled to the fed monopole. Metal perturbations on one or both of the two parasitic monopoles control their coupling phase to the fed monopole, and also determine whether the antenna is linear polarized or CP. In order to induce linear polarization, no metal perturbations are provided on the parasitic monopoles, and both parasitic monopoles are coupled to the fed monopole at null120 degrees. In order to induce CP, one of the parasitic monopoles couples at positive 120 degrees to the fed monopole, and the other parasitic monopole couples at negative 120 degrees to the fed monopole. Various perturbation options generate the phasing. One of the parasitic monopoles can have a capacitive shunt, and the other parasitic monopole can have a series inductance, or only one parasitic monopole can include a perturbation, either capacitive or inductive, depending on the sense of the CP that is desired. The three monopoles are supported by a dielectric substrate, or they are free-standing. A ground plane is provided directly under the three monopoles.

Either the first permittivity, the first permeability, or both characteristics of the first regions can be different respectively from the second permittivity and the second permeability of the second characteristic region of the substrate. Consequently, a desired reactance value for the reactive element can be determined at least partially by either the second relative permittivity or the second relative permeability.
