    • An apparatus and process for pre-loading an electrically stimulated smart material actuator product to obtain maximum work from the actuator. When a smart material actuator is optimally pre-loaded certain desirable characteristics become apparent, such as work, operational frequency, hysteresis, repeatability, and overall accuracy. When used in conjunction with a mechanically leveraged actuator structure the smart material actuator can be used to its greatest potential. Since the mechanically leveraged actuator can be based on the maximum work provided by the smart material actuator, certain attributes such as the force, and displacement of total system can be adjusted without loss to system efficiency. Pre-loading methods and a determination of the optimal pre-load force are disclosed. Each smart material actuator type has a unique work curve. In the design of an actuator assembly, the process of optimizing uses the unique work curve to optimize the design for the requirements of the particular application. The unique work curve is used by finding the place where the smart material actuator is capable of providing the most work in order to set the optimum pre-load point accordingly. Different mechanical pre-load techniques are provided.

    • Ultrasonic processes and systems demonstrate enhanced performance when various elements and/or components of an ultrasonic device are formed from Advanced Ceramic materials. An ultrasonic tool formed of an Advanced Ceramic can vibrate at the same frequency as the ultrasonic transducer(s) used to supply the ultrasonic energy, such that the tool functions as a single, fully-integrated transducerized entity. Piezo ceramics such as PZTs can be used to provide the ultrasonic energy, and can be directly attached to the tool, individually or in stacks. The resonance characteristics of the ultrasonic tool can be further enhanced by setting a thickness of the tool to an optimum thickness, whereby the tool can resonate uniformly upon excitation. In addition to providing enhanced performance, Advanced Ceramic tools do not demonstration the erosion or cavitation found in other existing tools.

    • The present invention provides a method for making high-frequency piezoelectric resonators so that constants of the resonator can be measured precisely. A cavity is formed at a central section of an AT-cut crystal substrate. Two grooves are formed at predetermined distances from the left and right of the cavity, and two more grooves are formed at predetermined distances outward from these two grooves. Two more grooves perpendicular to the first set of grooves are formed. A pair of main electrodes and a pair of secondary electrodes shorted to ground and surrounding the main electrodes are,disposed at roughly the center of the crystal substrate. One main electrode and one secondary electrode are used as inputs and the other main electrode and secondary electrode are used as outputs, with these two terminal pairs being used to measure and adjust a frequency.

    • A bimorph actuator is driven by electrostrictive materials configured to change length in response to applied electrical field. A first electrostrictive material is positioned between a first electrode and a second electrode. A second electrostrictive material is positioned between a second electrode and a third electrode. The second electrostrictive material and the first electrostrictive material are attached to each other such that a differential change in their respective lengths results in a lateral motion. A first voltage source provides a voltage differential between the first electrode and the third electrode. A second variable voltage applied to the second electrode causes the length of the first electrostrictive material to lengthen when the second electrostrictive material shortens, and vice versa. A system of electrodes for the bimorph actuator and a method for actuating electrostrictive materials are also provided.

In a master/slave arrangement, a first active area deflects (a nullmasternull), and a second active area reacts (a nullslavenull). Communication electronics in electrical communication with electrodes for the first active area and in electrical communication with electrodes for the second active area transfer electrical energy between the two active areas.
