    • A disk drive is disclosed with reduced resonance. The disk drive comprises a disk, a fixed spindle shaft disposed axially through the disk, a spindle motor for rotating the disk about the fixed spindle shaft, wherein a resonance is associated with the spindle motor rotating the disk. The disk drive further comprises a head, an actuator arm for actuating the head radially over the disk, a base, and a cover attached to the base to form a head disk assembly chamber. The cover comprises a shaft aperture positioned over the fixed spindle shaft, the shaft aperture for receiving a fastener for attaching the cover to the fixed spindle shaft. The cover further comprises a plurality of slots proximate the shaft aperture, wherein the shaft aperture and slots provide a flexible support for the fixed spindle shaft which reduces the resonance associated with the spindle motor.

    • The present invention provides a flexible support device that is easier to assemble, has more consistent damping characteristics when the temperature rises, enables simpler product design, and allows two members to move rotatably relative to each other. A floating bushing 29 is placed between a traverse base 20 having a bushing mounting flange 21b, and a drive base 10 having a traverse base support stud 11. The floating bushing 29 has a first fitting part 29c disposed between first and second damping parts 29a and 29b for fitting to the bushing mounting flange, and a second fitting part 29d formed integrally with a terminal side of the first damping part 29a. The floating bushing 29 is mounted on the traverse base support stud 11 with the second fitting part 29d covering the end 11d of the traverse base support stud 11. A movement limiting part for engaging this end of the traverse base support stud is formed integrally with the second fitting part and thus limits movement of the second fitting part toward the stud end.

    • Noise is reduced in a disk drive enclosure by using vibration damping materials on the inside surface of the enclosure. These materials and their placement on the inside surface of the enclosure reduce noise without thermally insulating the disk drive. A temperature controlled fan may be used to remove heat by convection while generating a minimum amount of noise. The connection between the disk drive and the external connector of the disk drive enclosure is made more reliable by using a printed circuit board instead of a cable. Because a printed circuit board has a fixed location and fixed layout, variability among disk drive enclosures can be minimized. Also, errors in manufacturing of the disk drive enclosure can be reduced. To facilitate the use of the disk drive in a stripe set, the disk drive enclosure has a set of mechanical interlocks that permit the enclosures to be stacked vertically. In one embodiment, the mechanical interlocks are constructed in a manner that permits stacking in unlocked and locked configurations. The locked configuration may be made permanent using an additional locking mechanism. These mechanical interlocks also may be used to support the enclosure on a desktop. The mechanical interlocks also may be constructed so that they can slide on a rail, permitting the enclosure to be used in a rack mount. The rack mount also may be provided with a quick-release mechanism that interacts with the mechanical interlocks to hold the disk drive enclosure in the rack mount.

    • A disk drive mounting system for isolating a disk drive assembly from machine vibration and shock. In one embodiment, the system includes a suspension frame and a disk drive assembly mounted to the frame using biased vibration isolation members, such as springs, which are each substantially aligned through the center of mass of the disk drive assembly. Accordingly, vibrational forces can be transmitted through the center of mass of the disk drive assembly. Preferably, the disk drive assembly includes a mounting chassis which holds a hard disk drive and includes openings through which damping bumpers can extend. In this embodiment, the bumpers each have a base portion and an extension portion, the extension portion extending through the openings in the mounting chassis to limit the transfer of shock to the disk drive. The bumpers can be attached to the suspension frame and/or to a protective cover for the assembly. Preferably, a slide bracket is provided to allow the system to be easily mounted to a machine tool system surface.
