    • Announcements for each subscriber are assembled specifically for that subscriber from speech segments stored in a digital memory. Each speech segment comprises a predetermined number of consecutive digital words stored in the digital memory and identified by a unique base address. A sequence of speech segment base addresses is placed in a first shift register which is rotated at a fixed rate. An incrementer increments the base addresses read from the shift register by an amount equal to the number of times that the entire base address sequence has been rotated, up to the number of digital words per speech segment. The incremented base addresses are used to access the digital memory. During the rotation of the first shift register, a second shift register is loaded with a second sequence of base addresses. The use of the first and second shift registers is alternated after an entire sequence of base addresses has been read the predetermined number of times so that the output of the digital memory consists of a continuous series of digital words in recurring frames of time-slots where the number of time-slots per frame is equal to the number of base addresses in a shift register. The system also includes a plurality of digital-to-analog speech generators which are uniquely associated with the output time-slots of the speech segment memory.

    • A speech recognition system for an automotive vehicle derive a spoken instruction start signal and a spoken instruction end signal when a smoothed spoken instruction signal exceeds or drops below a predetermined threshold level representing the intensity of the background noise for more than first and second predetermined time periods, respectively. Noise is determined by converting the output of a microphone transducing the spoken instruction into a single polarity signal that is smoothed with a long time constant. The single polarity variation is also smoothed with a shorter time constant. The signals with the long and short constants are applied to a comparator that derives a bi-level output signal. In response to transitions in first and second directions of the bi-level signal lasting for first and second durations, the start and end signals are respectively derived.

    • A voice data output apparatus judges whether amount of money data inputted is repeat registration data or not and, when it is repeat registration data, does not output a voice of the amount data. A CPU is connected to an input circuit, a print circuit, a display circuit, a RAM and the voice output circuit, through chip designating signal lines, an R/W signal line, an address bus line and a data bus line. The CPU delivers chip designating signals to the respective circuits to select the circuit to be used. The display circuit and the voice output circuit are selected by the same chip designating signal. When the repeat registration data is inputted with the input circuit, given code is stored in a digit representing the repeat registration in a register X of the CPU. When the data in the register X is transferred to the voice output circuit, the output circuit judges the code and does not produce the voice of the amount data. However, the amount data is displayed by the display circuit which has been simultaneously selected by the CPU.

    • A synthetic speech calculator is provided which is capable of generating an audible sound signal which can be representative of keyed data, sequences of keyed data (and errors), processed data, the contents of a memory or the contents of a counter. The sound signal can be suppressed under certain specific circumstances or made soft in intensity. A synthetic-speech calculator includes the keyboard consisting of digit keys and function keys, a desired number of registers for storing information entered by the depression of selected ones of the digit keys, a read-only-memory for storing a large number of digital codes as sound quantizing information, counter means for specifying the address of the memory so as to take a specific digital code out of the memory, a digital-to-analog converter for converting the specific digital code taken out of the memory into an audible sound signal, and a loud speaker driven by the audible sound signal and producing an audible sound. There are provided means responsive to combinations of at least two sequentially operated keys of the keyboard for modifying the output condition of the audible sound, for example, volume, speed, etc. The synthetic speech calculator also has a selection key and multi-function keys, such as 7/sin.theta.. If the selection key is depressed followed by actuation of one of the multi-function keys, as audible sound indicative of the second function of the multi-function key is audibly generated, i.e., "sin.theta." is audibly generated. If the selection key is not depressed prior to actuation of the multi-function key, an audibly sound indicative of the first function (7) is audibly generated. Similarly, the calculator will also develop an audible sound indicative of "EQUAL" if the following key sequence is actuated: a.times.b=, where a and b are numerals. The calculator will develop an audible sound indicative of "TWO" if the following key sequence is actuated: a.times.=.     • A system for multiplying the frequencies of a speech signal, or other audio signal, by a given multiplication factor, comprising an analog-digital converter for converting an audio signal to a digital signal having a bit rate f1 and means for temporarily storing that digital signal. The system further comprises apparatus for reading out the stored digital signal, in groups of n digits, at a bit rate f2, with means for synchronizing the readout apparatus to connect the groups of n digits in sequence. A digital-analog converter uses the digital readout to develop a speech signal modified in frequency in accordance with the rate f1/f2 but having the same time span as the original speech signal.
