    • A method of generating data representing an input profile defining a relationship between input color data generated by an input device and modified in accordance with a predetermined algorithm, and corresponding device independent data. The method comprises: a) operating the input device on a range of predetermined input colors to generate said input color data; b) processing said input color data in accordance with the predetermined algorithm to generate output data suitable for operating an output device; c) converting said output data to said device independent data; and, d) generating said input profile data such that application of said input profile to said input color data substantially generates said device independent data.

    • An index determination element selects index values as a function of the source color values. The index values pointing to LUT color values stored in a lookup table unit. The LUT color values read from the lookup table unit are used to generate output color values. Each output color value corresponds to a pixel, a first component of the output color values is output for at least two pixels at a time and second components are output separately for each of these at least two pixels. As a result there is a space of combinations of index values that results in substantially the same first component of the output values, even though they points to substantially different LUT color values for these at least two pixels. The index determination element selects a combination from this space to minimize an error in the second components of the output color values for the at least two pixels.

    • A method and apparatus for processing data of different sizes begins by processing first data to produce an n-bit resultant. Such processing may be performing an arithmetic function upon the data. In addition, second data is processed to produce an m-bit resultant. Such processing of the second data may also include performing an arithmetic function upon the second data. The processing then continues by mixing the n-bit resultant with the m-bit resultant to produce an m-bit mixed resultant. For example, the first data may be representative of RGB graphics data that is processed by a graphics core to produce an 8-bit resultant. The second data may be representative of video data that is processed by a video core to produce a 10-bit resultant. A mixer mixes the 8-bit graphics output with the 10-bit digital video output to produce a 10-bit mixed output. A digital-to-analog converter converts the 10-bit mixed output into an analog signal.

    • A period-based method for converting digital image data for a plurality of pixels from a first bit depth to a second bit depth includes receiving an input scanline of an arbitrary length comprising digital image data for a plurality of input image pixels. Each of the input image pixels is defined at the first bit depth. The input scanline is divided into a plurality of periods each comprising digital image data for a select number of input image pixels. The period is selected so that the image data for the select number of input image pixels exactly comprises m bytes when defined at the first bit depth and exactly comprises n bytes when defined at the second bit depth, wherein m and n are different integers. For each of the periods in succession, the image data for each of the select number of input image pixels is converted from the first bit depth to the second bit depth. A code generator generates hard-coded conversion operating instructions and a look-up table for specified bit conversion operations and generic conversion operating instructions for all other bit conversion operations.
