    • A substantially U-shaped gas discharge lamp (1′), containing mercury for the gas discharge, is connected to a high-frequency driver circuit (6′). To ensure that the gas discharge lamp operates with minimum loss and maximum light yield, the respective output terminals (4′, 5′) of the high-frequency driver circuit are not electrically grounded and the central section (11′) of the gas discharge lamp is capacitively coupled to an electric ground. A substantial reduction of lamp current in the central section is ensured, thus lowering thermal production in the central section of the gas discharge lamp. Accordingly, the central section becomes the coldest place in the gas discharge chamber and the place where condensation of the mercury occurs. The mercury vapor pressure can thus be regulated and the light yield optimized.

    • A communications system that includes one or more free space electron switches. The free space electron switch employs an array of electron emitters, where each emitter is responsive to an RF or optical input signal on an input channel. Each emitter includes a cathode that emits electrons in response to the input signal. Each emitter further includes an aiming anode that directs the beam of electrons to a desired detector within an array of detectors that converts the beam of electrons to a representative RF or optical signal on an output channel. Each emitter may include a modulating electrode that generates an electric field to modulate data onto the beam of electrons. The communications systems employing the switch can be an ISDN, DSLAM networks, packet routing systems, ADSL networks, PBX systems, local exchange systems, etc.

    • An electroluminescent driver circuit with improved power consumption efficiency. In one embodiment, an electroluminescent driver circuit comprises a load to provide illumination, an inductor, a transistor and a plurality of switches. The inductor has a first side coupled to a positive terminal of a power supply and a second side selectively coupled to the load. The transistor is coupled to selectively conduct current from the second side of the inductor to a ground terminal of the power supply in response to a digital signal. The plurality of switches are coupled to the load to selectively charge and discharge the load. Moreover, the switches selectively provide a discharge path for positive charge on the load to be discharged to the positive terminal of the power supply.

    • A high-resolution field emission display that applies a field emission device (or a field emission array) being an electron source element to a flat panel display device. The field emission display includes an upper plate and a lower plate that face each other, wherein the lower plate and the upper plate are vacuum-packaged in parallel positions.
