    • A learning system is disclosed which allows student interaction and student creation of a composition. The system has a series of multi-media interactive booths which are grouped in stations with different themes related to a general subject. Each booth has a number of multi-media based lessons relating to the theme of the station. Students are supplied with a control box which may be carried by the student as they move from booth to booth. The control box allows a student to play a musical composition. The musical composition is stored by a central computer and uniquely assigned to a database record associated with the specific control box. The central computer also keeps track of the number of booths and lessons which have been completed by the specific control box. Each booth has a number of specific programs which teach students by interactive input. After completing a certain number of booths, students may combine their compositions at an orchestra wall which will play the stored composition in conjunction with a prearranged musical composition.

    • A computerized music teaching instrument including a computer provided with a sound system capable of reproducing the tones of a music scale stored in a tone base, and a video screen adapted to exhibit an image selected from a series thereof stored in a data base. Each image exhibits a virtual keyboard having a row of numbered keys representing the respective tones in a musical scale, behind which is a row of puppets or progressively greater height, all puppets being shown in a reclining state except the puppet corresponding to the key in the keyboard shown in a depressed and activated state, as if actually pressed by the finger of a player. Associated with the computer is a remote controller provided with a keypad having an array of numbered switches corresponding to the keyboard keys and operating in conjunction with a digitizer whereby when a player depresses a keypad switch, the digitizer then generates a binary signal representing the number of the depressed key.

    • An exemplary embodiment of the invention is a method of providing training to a plurality of users in a system including a training system and a plurality of user systems coupled to the training system via a network. The method includes receiving a request for training at the training system and providing a training program to the user system in response to the request for training. The method also includes receiving a request to edit or create a training program and providing an editable training program template to the user system in response to the request to edit or create a training program. The editable training program template permits entry of content for the training program. Other embodiments of the invention include a system and storage medium for implementing the method.

    • A method and system for testing the speech intelligibility of a child comprises providing a set of target sounds as words in the presence and absence of competing sound(s) of a variety of types so as to enable an analysis of the aspects of competing sounds and their respective effects on the speech intelligibility of a child. Locations at which competing sound(s) is provided is varied to enable an evaluation of its effect on the spatial release from masking. The target words used in the test are first determined to be within the vocabulary of the child. The child is required to respond to the target word by selecting a picture representation of the target word from among several picture choices, thus providing an interactive aspect to the test. There may optionally be provided a positive or a negative reinforcement. The sound level at which the target words are presented may vary adaptively according to the child's responses, the change in sound level being determined by a set of rules. The test is repeated over several target words and under a variety of types and locations of competing sounds and the child's responses recorded in a results database. The results are available for further analysis by a user to produce customized output. A computerized system is disclosed that enables the provisioning of the test in a controlled manner, analysis of the data and further engagement the child.

    • A method of navigating textual information via auditory indicators is provided. Through the pervasive and immediate articulation of virtually all textual elements in response to a comparatively passive action, such as a selection device rollover, a user may quickly peruse titles, headings, list items, and so on, as well as emphasized text, paragraphs, captions, and virtually any unit of visually contiguous text. A user may also hear a particular selected word via a slightly more active action, such as clicking a mouse button. Via use of this method, a child, or other user who may understand a language, but not be able to recognize its orthography, may successfully and easily navigate textual documents.
