    • A coin sorting apparatus includes a coin hopper (24) having a coin exit aperture (30) and a ramp (32) located adjacent thereto. The ramp (32) includes an upper end (34) and slopes downward to a lower end (36). A plurality of apertures (38a-38d) are formed through the ramp (32). The apertures (38a-38d) are sized and arranged such that coins of differing diameters sliding down the ramp (32) pass through one of the apertures (38a-38d). A coin container assembly (50) located below the ramp (32) includes first and second sets (54,56) of coin containers (52). Each set (54,56) includes a plurality of coin containers (54a-d,56a-d), respectively. The containers (56a-d) of the second set (56) are positioned adjacent the containers (54a-d) of the first set (54). When one of the containers (54a-d) of the first set (54) is filled with coins, additional coins slide into a corresponding container (56a-d) of the second set (56). A coin separator mechanism (90) dispenses coins from the coin hopper (24) onto the ramp (32). The container assembly (50) moves between an operative position for receiving coins and a container removal position. A safety switch (110) selectively disables the coin separator mechanism (90) when the container assembly (50) is moved out of its operative position. A cam and follower mechanism including a cam (70) and a follower (84) pivots the container assembly (50) between the operative and the container removal positions. The cam (70) includes two dwell points (80,82) for releasably securing the follower (84).

    • A coin sorting apparatus comprising a combination of a separating device unit and a cover device unit, the cover device unit being operative to guide sorted coins separately and in a substantially standing position but with a slant along a path for sorting and collection. The separating device unit includes a guide wall for guiding the coins and having a plurality of adjustable sized windows for selectively receiving the coins for sorting and collection. The cover device unit has a motor-driven belt that with the guide wall defines the path and is oscillated to open and close a gap between the moving belt to effect movement of coins of variable size along the path.

    • A public telephone that has the ability to return change to a user is described. A coin changer that is advantageously sized to fit within the space available in a public telephone built to BellCore standards advantageously replaces the coin collect/reject equipment located after a "coin-discrimination" portion of conventional coin mechanisms found in such telephones. Existing public telephones may be readily retrofitted with the present coin changer. A three-position "trigate" is advantageously used to direct a coin to a return chute, or to one of two mechanical coin sorters within the coin changer. In one embodiment, each sorter is operable to sort three different coin denominations. Escrow capacity is included to temporarily store sorted coins. The sorters/escrow are advantageously readily-removable so that a first sorter may be removed and another inserted to provide sorting and escrow for other coins from other coin sets, including those from other countries. Coins are delivered from escrow, under control of a processor, to a collect/return manifold containing steering vanes and coin-receiving channels. The processor is operable to determine (i) whether or not change is due, and (ii) if change is due, what coins should comprise such change. Up to three coins, each of a different denomination, are delivered to the manifold at a time. The processor controls coin routing through the manifold to a return port or a coin-collection reservoir via the steering vanes.

    • A coin counter, dispenser and packaging device in which the coins pass downwardly along a ramp whose holes are of gradually increasing diameter downwardly and are defined by plates whose portions remote from a wall of a ramp are set back slightly more than the diameter of the coins adapted to pass through the holes so that the coins ride along this wall. Below the tubes in which the coins are collected beneath the ramp the support bars are provided which can be actuated to drop stacks of coins into sleeves with transparent sacks for packaging the coins. When the dispensing tray is fixed in place, these support bars are pressed back and the stacks are freed to rest upon the dispensing tray and ejector bars can be operated to discharge the coins one by one.

    • A coin selecting and counting machine for selecting and counting a number of mixed coins in accordance with the kinds thereof on the basis of differences in their diameters. The coin selecting and counting machine includes a rotary disc which is made rotatable for discharging the mixed coins by the centrifugal force thereof and a selecting and counting track formed with selecting holes for receiving the discharged mixed coins to allow the same to fall into the corresponding holes, while being unidirectionally conveyed one by one. The track is composed of a guide rail section, a curved rail section and a counting rail section. The curved rail section extends between the other two rail sections for changing the moving direction of the mixed coins to force the same into contact with its curved inner wall. Thus, the coins, which might otherwise be imprecisely located widthwise of the track, can have their circumferences further forced into contact with the inner wall of the counting rail section while being selected and counted.

    • A coin sorting mechanism having a coin passage for travel of coins to be separated according to diameter and a sorting mechanism for sorting the coins according to diameter. The sorting mechanism comprises a succession of deflection bars having respective graduated sorting holes for deflecting from the coin passage, coins, disks and the like with a diameter greater than the sorting hole in the respective deflection bar. The sorted coins are gravitationally conveyed by the respective bars for discharge into compartments at a receiving station. Each bar is provided with a further sorting hole located along the path of travel of the deflected coins in proceeding for discharge from the bar to the receiving station. The further sorting hole has an extent in one direction which is less than the diameter of the coin which the respective deflection bar is to divert whereby undersized coins are discharged from the deflection bar before they have reached the location for discharge to the receiving station. A channel is positioned beneath the further sorting holes of all of the deflection bars for receiving undersized coins from the bars for deposit into a collecting container. Each of the deflection bars consists of two separate portions which are adjustably connected to adjust the sizes of both sorting holes in each deflection bar.

    • Coins dropped into a hopper are directed one by one down a chute and into a coin wrapping tube located on a turntable. The tube is in vertical attitude and is open at its upper end to receive the coins. When a predetermined number of coins has been loaded in the tube, the machine is programmed to advance the turntable so that the coin-filled wrapper is moved to the next station and is there acted upon by a crimping die to close the open end of the tube. At the next advance, the coin-filled and closed tube progresses to a discharge station where it is ejected from the machine. In the meantime, an empty tube is deposited on the turntable preparatory to being moved ahead to the coin loading station, thereby completing the cycle.
