    • The specification discloses a technique for generating seismic impulses which includes suspending a plurality of discrete explosive charges one above the other. Detonation wires lead to detonation caps attached to each of the explosive charges. Circuitry generates a plurality of firing pulses which are applied to the detonation wires to sequentially explode the charges from top to bottom. All of the charges are detonated within a time interval less than the time required for the blast from the top charge to destroy the detonation wire leading to the bottom charge. The charges are sequentially detonated at time intervals substantially corresponding to the time of travel of an acoustic pulse through the formations between the adjacent charges.

    • Within the stationary, upstanding cylindrical housing of a rapid fire seismic gas exploder an expansible detonation chamber is formed between a base resting on the earth and a piston adapted to move reciprocally. A plurality of separate external gas entry conduits communicate with the detonation chamber at spaced apart inlets in the wall of the housing. Each conduit is supplied from its own separate gas mixer which in turn is interconnected with sources of fuel gas and oxidizing gas through a pair of remotely operable flow control valves. As the pairs of control valves are actuated in timed sequence at a desired rate of fire, successive charges of combustible gas mixture are injected into the detonation chamber, utilizing one mixer and its associated gas entry conduit at a time. Correspondingly timed spark ignition is provided in or adjacent each mixer, resulting in a series of gas explosions in the chamber which coordinates with the reciprocal movement of the piston. By increasing the number of these separate mixer-conduit combinations, a rapid-fire shot sequence of any practical length can be achieved without preignition.

    • This invention describes an apparatus and method for generating seismic waves in the earth for seismic geophysical prospecting. It involves a slender pipe open at the lower end, which can be driven into the earth to a shallow depth. The upper end is closed. Means are provided for introducing oxygen and acetylene through a pair of control valves and check valves, for a selected period of time. The oxygen and acetylene are mixed in the pipe and flow downward through the pipe and through the perforations into the earth, and fill the voids and fissures in the shallow sediments. Means are provided in the top end of the pipe to detonate the gas mixture. The detonation wave travels down the pipe and eventually reaches the openings at the lower end, and detonates the gas in the pores and fissures of the earth. The resulting explosion opens up the fissures and provides a larger void space than was there before. The seismic waves generated by the explosion are detected in the normal manner by means of transducers, cables, amplifiers, recorders, etc.The pipe is pressed further into the ground as the result of the expansion of the void space, and the operation of filling the void space with combustible gas and detonating the gas is repeated, until on each succeeding operation, the volume of gas introduced becomes large enough to create a seismic wave of sufficient intensity to provide a satisfactory seismic record.

    • Seismic waves are produced at a high rate by a method and apparatus which utilise the successive detonation comprising fragmented explosives. Wads of an explosive from 1 to 30 percent as much of a substance intended to lower the electrical resistance of the explosive as there is of said explosive, and from 1 to 30 percent as much of an oxidisable substance as there is of said explosive are propelled, by a compressed gas, along a duct opening into the outside medium. A high voltage is applied between an electrode at the outlet of the duct and an electrode spaced from this outlet, which voltage is applied to the electrodes at an instant determined by the passage of the wad of explosive near the duct outlet.
