    • A tag flow measurement system wherein a first and a second measurement path are provided across a flowing fluid, and a receiver in each path receives signals modulated by scatters in the fluid. The direction of signal propagation in one path faces in an opposite sense to, e.g., is anti-parallel to, the direction of propagation in the other path, and the two receiver outputs are correlated to determine a time interval representative of flow velocity. In one embodiment each path is defined by a transmitter on one side of the conduit and a receiver on the other side of the conduit, and the positions or orientations of transmitter and receiver are reversed in the second pair. Thus, the first transmitter may lie on the same side of the conduit as the second receiver, and the second transmitter may lie on the same side of the conduit as the first receiver. Diametral or chordal paths may be used. A prototype clamp on system detects flowing air at atmospheric pressure in a schedule 40 one inch steel pipe over an extended range, at flow rates as low as several meters per second. The coherent crosstalk between one transmitter and the receiver of the other pair is greatly reduced, and travels only through the pipe and not across the fluid, so the cross-correlation signal to noise ratio may be enhanced by a factor of ten or more over that of a conventional tag correlation system. This allows effective operation in small conduits, at small spacings, at low flows and in other difficult measurement situations. Each transmitter may operate at a different frequency, and the received signals may be demodulated in phase quadrature to further enhance channel separation and received signal power. Frequencies or frequency pairs in the range of approximately one to four megahertz may be useful for one inch pipe, while lower frequencies in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 megahertz are advantageously employed for larger conduits. Spacings may be ¼ to {fraction (1/10)} of a pipe diameter, and a common spacing, e.g., two inches may be employed for conduits over a diameter range of one to ten inches with high accuracy.

    • A multiphase flow meter distributed system is disclosed that is capable of measuring phase flow rates of a multiphase fluid. The distributed system includes at least one flow meter disposed along the pipe, an additional sensor disposed along the pipe spatially removed from the flow meter, and a multiphase flow model that receives flow related parameters from the flow meter and the additional sensor to calculate the phase flow rates. The flow meter provides parameters such as pressure, temperature, fluid sound speed and/or velocity of the fluid, and the additional sensor provides a parameter indicative of pressure and or temperature of the fluid. Depending on production needs and the reservoir dimensions, the distributed system may utilize a plurality of flow meters disposed at several locations along the pipe and may further include a plurality of additional sensors as well. The distributed system preferably uses fiber optic sensors with bragg gratings. This enables the system to have a high tolerance for long term exposure to harsh temperature environments and also provides the advantage of multiplexing the flow meters and/or sensors together.

    • There is provided an apparatus for measuring flow rates of multi-phase flows in metal pipes, the apparatus comprising a transceiver generating a pulsed Doppler signal in the range 100 KHz to 10 microHz and an impedance device adapted to be coupled to a pipe so as to reduce or prevent reflections occurring from a pipe wall in response to the pulsed signal. The apparatus includes signal processor for analysing reflected signals received by the transceiver and for calculating the energy contained in a received signal. The pulsed signal is a shear wave which assists analysis of the reflected signals. The impedance device comprises a sound absorbing block made from plastics material with tungsten particles embedded therein. Different embodiments using various arrangements of transceivers are described, and also a related method of using the apparatus.

    • Acoustic flow meters are used for the measurement of flow velocity of fluids. They have particular application in meters for gas and water in pipelines. The meter includes a tube fitted with three or more acoustic transducers distributed along its length and arranged to transmit wave packets up and down between at least two pairs of the acoustic transducers. The wave packets comprise a signal including zero crossings spaced apart by a packet period determined by a known packet frequency. The flow meter also includes measurement means associated with the transducers to make first measurements of received packets, from which the time of arrival of the zero crossings of a received packet can be determined relative to the time of transmission of the packet. A second measurement from which a particular zero crossing in the transmitted packet can be identified in the received packet.
