    • An expansion engine capable of extracting energy from an expanding gas and distributing that energy between the gas and a fluid stream to generate a propulson or power force. The engine includes a thrustor mounted for rotation about a shaft and consisting of a hub and a concentric shroud connected by a number of evenly spaced, helical vanes. The vanes divide the annular space between the hub and shroud into equal sized helical channels which are open at both ends. The forward ends of the channels are open during a portion of the rotation and closed during a second portion of the rotation. The channels are filled with fluid when in the unobstructed position, and an expandable gas is delivered behind each slug of fluid in the channel when in the obstructed position. The high pressure gas accelerates the already moving water to the rear of each channel.

    • Noise suppression is achieved in a closed Rankine cycle torpedo including a propulsor 36, a turbine 26 connected to the propulsor 36, the turbine 26 having an annular outlet 40. The regenerator 42 is disposed about the turbine outlet 40 and has a radially outwardly opening annular regenerator outlet 46. A hull condenser 10, 48, 52 has an axially opening inlet 54 and a conduit 56 connects the inlet 54 with the regenerator outlet 46 and has a wall 58 configured to cause fluid exiting in a radial direction from the regenerator outlet 46 to flow axially to the inlet 54. At least one curved vane 60, 62 is located within the conduit 56 for converting radial fluid flow to axial fluid flow and a sound suppressing elastomer 64, 74 is associated with each of the wall 58 and the vane 60, 62 for attenuating vibration imparted thereto by fluid impinging on the associated wall 58 or vane 60, 62.

    • A steadily operating reactor system employing a molten alkali metal as a fuel and a halogen or halogenated gas or liquid as an oxidizer includes a main reactor vessel which is continuously supplied with fuel and oxidizer. Reaction products generated during the reaction form a separate product-rich, liquid layer in the molten alkali metal, which layer is removed from the reactor vessel. In one embodiment, a trap connected to a storage tank may be heated to cause the separation of unreacted fuel and reaction products in the product-rich layer. A pump system connected to the tank removes the unreacted fuel for reintroduction to the main reactor vessel.
