    • An assembly is provided for converting a firearm of standard caliber to one of a smaller caliber and includes a conversion chamber adaptor with a bolt mounted for movement between recoil and battery positions. A backplate damper assists in maintaining the operating components in assembly and absorbs recoil impact energy of the recoiling mass upon firing of the weapon. When the conversion assembly is installed in a weapon having a buffer disposed rearwardly of its chamber, the backplate damper additionally serves to transmit that energy to the buffer.

    • A weapon whose barrel terminates in cartridge-receiving chamber which, in the firing state, is surrounded by the sleeve of a breech-closing mechanism. The chamber is longitudinally slotted to define a set of flexible fingers extending rearwardly from an unslotted forward section. When the cartridge is fired, the resultant high gas pressure therein causes momentary dilation of the casing, which then presses outwardly against the forward section of the chamber and the set of fingers in the rear section threof. The pressure exerted by the casing against the forward section of the chamber produces a gas seal preventing the escape of gas into the breech of the weapon, while the pressure exerted against the set of fingers causes deflection thereof, whereby the fingers or clips associated therewith frictionally engage the inner surface of the surrounding sleeve to lock the breechclosing mechanism and to retard the release thereof until the gas pressure has diminished to a safe level, permitting the casing to contract to assume its original state.

    • In a firearm with a cylinder bolt mechanism, a locking chamber (27) is arranged in a space in the barrel between the rear end of the barrel and the rear end of the cartridge chamber for a bolt tip (28) on the bolt. By introducing the bolt complete with the bolt head into the barrel and locking it securely in this position, it is possible to achieve greater accuracy because the bolt head acts as a stiffening connection between the barrel and the receiver, so that these components of the firearm are unable to move relative to each other as the result of oscillations in the barrel when the cartridge detonates.The rotation of the bolt head may be produced by the axial movement of a bolt handle, whereby the rotational motion is achieved by causing the bolt handle to interact with a spiral groove in a bolt head, of which the bolt tip constitutes a front part. Alternatively, the rotational motion may be achieved by turning the bolt handle upwards and into recess in the bolt body, at the same time as the mainspring is tensioned by sliding between lock lugs arranged for this purpose.
