    • A valve, connectable to a source of compressed gas, having a closing member movable into and out of a valve closing position, and a triggering mechanism by which the closing member can be moved from that position. Gas pressure in the valve holds the closing member in its valve closing position until the triggering mechanism is actuated. The triggering mechanism includes a cam segment and a cam follower pin, the pin being positioned to unseat the closing member when induced to do so by movement of the cam segment. The valve can be used to control the flow of propulsion gas through a spear-fishing gun. A spear is mounted on a rod through which compressed air is forced. The compressed air is forced out through openings in the side of the rod so as to act on a flexible sleeve which in turn acts against the open end of the spear mounted on the sleeve. The pressure on the open end of the spear holds the spear in place while sufficient pressure for projecting the spear is being built-up in the hollow portion of the spear. The closed end portion of the hollow area of the spear is adjacent the open end of the rod from which the compressed air flows.

The elastic sleeve and body define a further chamber which is cooperative with a trigger to selectively release the spear. Pressure on the spear by the elastic sleeve holds the spear tight before firing, but deformation of the sleeve away from the spear during firing permits the spear to be released.

    • A launching device of the present invention includes a launch unit having a first coupling element and a second coupling element. A barrel may be releasably connected to one of the first and second coupling elements and a cylinder may be releasably connected to the other of the first and second coupling elements. The launch unit further includes a selector element to allow a user to pre-select an evacuation level of the contents of the cylinder. A specially designed valve assembly, bolt assembly and locking sear may also be incorporated that allow complete evacuation of the compressed gas through the launch unit and permit the projection of large objects such as grappling hooks. The launching device may also be converted to use as a fire extinguisher by quick connecting a cone shaped barrel and a cylinder of liquid carbon dioxide.

    • A bullet is fired from an ammunition cartridge upon piercing a breakaway section in the rear wall of the cartridge to form a gas escape port. The cartridge has one open end in which is seated the bullet and the breakaway section of the rear wall is directly opposite the bullet. A moveable sealing element is adapted to move between two positions. One position seals off the opening in the one end, and the other position is displaced from the opening to allow gas to escape under pressure from the opening. Piston-type element, in response to the housing wall being pierced, stops the flow of gas from this escape port and moves the sealing element from the first to the second position.

    • The present embodiments provide compact launching apparatuses for use in launching non-lethal projectiles. Some embodiments contain a gas pressure diffuser to enhance the ability to simultaneously launch multiple frangible projectiles. The present embodiments can be used offensively, and defensively as protection against threatening humans or animals.
