    • When a fluid passes through a conventional elbow or valve in a piping system, turbulence is created in the fluid flow. The fluid may not stabilize and return to a laminar flow until 40-50 pipe diameters downstream. Turbulence in a piping system can cause a variety of problems such as noise, vibration, and/or erosion. Turbulence also creates a pressure drop which is undesirable. The flow diffuser of the present invention may be configured as a 90° elbow for use in a piping system to reduce turbulence and pressure drops as the fluid passes through the improved elbow. The elbow of the present invention included an elongate tapered discharge nozzle. The elbow can restore substantially laminar flow in a space of about four pipe diameters.

    • A valve or ball reversal orifice provides provide a first flow restriction to a material flowing through the ball reversal orifice and a second flow restriction when the material reverses flow direction. The valve includes a housing having at least first and second walls that define a cavity therein. The cavity is configured such that a cross-sectional area of the cavity taken perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the cavity decreases from the second wall to the first wall. A first port is provided in the first wall for allowing material to enter or exit a cavity, and a second port is provided in the second wall for allowing material to enter or exit the cavity. A flow restrictor, such as a ball, disposed in the cavity and is movable between a relatively large portion of said cavity and a relatively small portion of said cavity to provide different flow restriction depending on the direction of material flow through the cavity.

    • The present invention provides a cost effective means by which pressure reduction in a fluid flow control device is optimized. The pressure reduction achieved according to the present invention also minimizes valve wear and presents new solutions in reducing, attenuating, eliminating, damping, redirecting, or otherwise defeating valve noise. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a flow control device is provided including a valve trim assembly comprising a plurality of valve trim disks defining a plurality of flow paths along a fluid passage between a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet of the flow control device. Respective flow paths defined by the valve trim disks comprise an expansion/contraction mechanism, a velocity control mechanism, an acoustic chamber, and frequency shifting passages. The expansion/contraction mechanism has a cross section including rapid increases and decreases in cross-sectional flow area. The velocity control mechanism defines a cross-sectional flow profile defining a relatively low cross-sectional flow area proximate the fluid inlet and a relatively high cross-sectional flow area proximate the fluid outlet. The acoustic chamber is configured to defeat acoustic disturbances generated in the expansion/contraction mechanism and the velocity control mechanism. The frequency shifting passages are configured to direct fluid flow from the acoustic chamber to the fluid outlet and increase the sonic frequency of acoustic disturbances associated with the directed fluid.

    • A shield is provided for a toilet on which a seat is hinged for rotation between a down position on the rim of the toilet bowl and an up position angularly displaced from the rim of the toilet bowl. A C-shaped flat clip is adapted to grip the rim of the toilet bowl at one side thereof. The top surface of this clip is substantially flat, paralleling the top surface of the toilet rim. At the outboard edge of this clip is a hinge supporting a spring-biased lever that extends inward and downward into the bowl of the toilet, supporting on the distal end thereof a substantially strike pad for absorbing the impact of a urine stream impinging upon it, reducing noise and reducing splatter. The lever is engagable against the underside of the seat for downward displacement of the lever and thus the strike pad in response to force exerted on the lever by the underside of the seat during rotation of the seat into the down position.
