    • In an ignition device for use in an internal combustion engine in which a spark plug and an ignition coil are integrated with each other and mounted in a cylinder head, a case is made of an electrical conductive material and one end portion of a secondary winding of the ignition coil is electrically connected to a center electrode of the spark plug while the other end portion of the secondary winding and an earth electrode of the spark plug are electrically connected to the case. Thus, the low-voltage side of the secondary winding and the earth electrode are electrically connected to each other through the case. This eliminates the need for a connector terminal and a wire harness for the electrical connection of the low-voltage side of the secondary winding to the internal combustion engine.

    • To provide a four-cycle engine, in which a pair of intake valve ports is openable/closable by respective intake valves and a pair of exhaust valve ports is openable/closable by respective exhaust valves. The pair of intake valve ports and the pair of exhaust valve ports are provided in a cylinder head such that they are positioned on both sides of a first virtual plane which contains the axial line of the cylinder bore and passes through an approximately central portion of the combustion chamber. A pair of ignition plugs is mounted in the cylinder head. The pair of ignition plugs is mounted such that the degradation of a flame propagation condition is minimized, even if accidental firing of either of the ignition plugs occurs. The pair of ignition plugs is disposed substantially symmetrically with respect to a second virtual plane which passes through the center of a combustion chamber and is perpendicular to the first virtual plane. The ignition plugs are mounted in the cylinder head such that they have axial lines extending substantially in parallel to the first virtual plane. The ignition plugs are tilted with a distance therebetween becoming smaller toward the combustion chamber. End portions of the ignition plugs, which project into the combustion chamber, are disposed in a region surrounded by the intake valve ports and the exhaust valve ports.

    • In an ignition device for an internal combustion engine, comprising a spark plug made to carry out an electric discharge between an center electrode and an earth electrode and an ignition coil having a primary winding and a secondary winding for supplying a high voltage to the spark plug, notch portions are made in a ceramic spool on which one of the primary and secondary windings is wound and projecting portion are made in an insulating-resin-made holding member into which connector terminals are incorporated, with the projecting portions being engaged with the notch portions. The engagement of the projecting portions and the notch portions prevents the connector terminals from moving with respect to the ceramic spool in circumferential directions of the ceramic spool during terminal connection work. This solves the problems in that, in the case of the employment of a ceramic spool, because difficulty is encountered in insert-molding the connector terminals in the ceramic spool, the connector terminals can move with respect to the ceramic spool during terminal connection work for the connection of the winding to the connector terminals to cause poor terminal connection workability.

    • A retaining apparatus for mounting a component in an aperture formed in a mounting surface includes an elongated base member having opposite ends. At least two generally parallel side members each extend from an associated one of said base member ends. Each side member includes a free end. A component having a flange with at least two slots formed therein receives an associated side member in each of the slots. A locking means extends from said side members adjacent said free ends. As the component is inserted in the mounting surface aperture, force is applied to move the free ends of the side members toward each other to permit the locking means to pass through the aperture in the mounting surface. When the force is removed, the locking means and the flange engage opposite sides of the mounting surface to releasably retain the component in the aperture.
